- i find it interesting the ways in which people from various backgrounds treat doing studies of raves. this isn't too surprising, considering i come from an anthropology background. so i break things down into cultural systems, i have my own vocabulary that i use and define things i write about with. a sociologist would, as expected, have another, and a psychologist, a philosopher, or neuroscientist still others.

Frugal college librarian 'fesses up: I'm $1 million donor (Oct 15 2003 16:59 GMT)

- News From The Denver Post on Ethel Marie Rice, who recently dropped that pleasant bombshell on her alma mater, when she revealed that she was the anonymous philanthropist who several years ago donated $1 million to the college's art department and funded two scholarships for art students and women's athletics. "Miss Rice," as patrons called this petite, bespectacled woman in home-sewn skirts and blouses, was the take-no-guff shusher of loud visitors to the Western State College library. The only child of a coal miner, she never married, and her life seemed as orderly as the Dewey Decimal system. She was a paper-clip-saver. Before she retired two years ago, she harbored a dislike of the library's newfangled computers.

Traffic overwhelms new online science journal (Oct 15 2003 16:59 GMT)

- CNET Says The inaugural issue of the journal, called the Public Library of Science Biology, is the first journal to be published by the Public Library of Science (PLoS), a San Francisco nonprofit that's backed by several highly regarded scientists who want to see scientific research freely distributed online. Not surprisingly, the free distribution model seems be going over well. Within the first eight hours of the journal's launch, traffic on the site spiked to more than half a million hits, said Nick Twyman, director of information technology and computer operations at PLoS. The traffic has overwhelmed the group's servers, causing PLoS to direct visitors to other sites, where they can access simplified versions of the journal. Twyman said he hopes to get the site up and running again by Wednesday.

Neglect of Australian library resources a national trend (Oct 15 2003 16:59 GMT)

- A Short One From Australia quotes Rupert Murdoch "Lack of public, private and government funding has driven our libraries to downsize and cost-cut at the very time they should be at their most productive," he said. "The number of Australian students at higher education has steadily grown, but the staff at our university and research libraries have had to be reduced."
