'Iranian Nobel Winner Demands Release of Dissidents' (Oct 15 2003 23:53 GMT) - Yahoo AP Iranian Nobel Peace Prize Winner Shirin Ebadi called Wednesday for the immediate release of jailed dissidents in the Islamic Republic and insisted that human rights were not incompatible with Islam. The human rights lawyer's Nobel win has ignited fierce debate in Iran with hard-liners labeling her a political stooge of the West while pro-reform activists hail her as a symbol of the fight for greater democracy and freedom in Iran. "I wish for the release of all political prisoners and jailed journalists, as soon as possible," Ebadi told a news conference the day after returning to Iran to an emotional reception from hundreds of supporters. Dozens of pro-reform activists have been jailed and scores of liberal newspapers have been shut down by Iran's hard-line judiciary in the past four years. |

I finally managed to see ... (Oct 15 2003 23:51 GMT) - I finally managed to see Shaolin Soccer. It relied a little too much on the sophomoric humor for my taste, but OH MY GOD the kung fu soccer scenes are unbelievable. Not to be missed. That is, if Miramax ever actually manages to release it. |

Online Herbal Products Not Safe (Oct 15 2003 23:47 GMT) - This shouldn't be a huge surprise to most people, but a new study of supposedly "herbal remedies" available online turned up the fact that many are dangerous to your health. Despite claims to be "all natural", many contain aristolochic acid, which has been linked to cancer and kidney failure. Of course, this comes just a month after a study found that many of those pills were "contaminated with fecal matter". |
