Cubs Lose!! Cubs Lose!! (Oct 16 2003 03:59 GMT) - I'd like to raise my hand in a toast with Harry Caray: to the Cubbies, the only team able to lose back-to-back games with the heart of their pitching rotation, at home in Wrigley Field to give up their best chance at a World Series berth in fifty years. Every year, come rain or shine I'll support you despite the fact that you string me along again and again. You are truly the most difficult team to be a fan for, and being the massochists that we are, we love you for it. Thanks for another great season, probably the best ever. |

AoIR Toronto (Oct 16 2003 03:59 GMT) - For the first time during my many-legged tour, the city of Toronto is the first to provide any level of connectivity, with an open network drop in my room, free wireless in a number of spots, and pay-for internet drops in nearly every hotel. So maybe it's no Foocamp, but it sure beats the thick walls of Oxford. And the payoff? For the first time in many weeks I get to talk to my peeps. Assuming that the Association of Internet Researchers conference is providing free wireless, I'll be posting my notes somewhere in cyberspace. |

HydroJ: Object-Oriented Pattern Matching for Evolvable Distributed Systems (Oct 16 2003 03:59 GMT) - From Craig Chambers, et al. at the University of Washington comes HydroJ... In an evolving software system, components must be able to change independently while remaining compatible with their peers. One obstacle to independent evolution is the brittle parameter problem: the ability of two components to communicate can depend on a number of inessential details of the types, structure, and/or contents of the values communicated... |

PDC: Designing the CLR (Oct 16 2003 03:59 GMT) - From "Everett" to "Whidbey" to "Orcas", the Common Language Runtime is evolving, with new features and improved performance in each release. Come hear the story of the CLR and discuss with the CLR architects how they designed the wicked features, and their approach to topics such as performance tuning. See previous item. This panel includes Chris Brumme, which should make going to the PDC worthwhile... A related panel which also looks interesting will discuss Hosting the CLR in Your Applications. |

The Future of .NET Languages (Oct 16 2003 03:59 GMT) - One of the unique aspects of the .NET platform is its support for multiple programming languages, with over 23 available today. How do these multiple languages influence the design of the CLR and CLS? How can languages written to the CLS differentiate themselves from one another? Join the architects of languages including C#, C++, VB. |

Programming with Rectangles, Triangles, and Circles (Oct 16 2003 03:59 GMT) - This paper proposes extending popular object-oriented programming languages such as C#, VB or Java with native support for XML. In our approach XML documents or document fragments become first class citizens. This means that XML values can be constructed, loaded, passed, transformed and updated in a type-safe manner. The type system extensions, however, are not based on XML Schemas. We show that XSDs and the XML data model do not fit well with the class-based nominal type system and object graph representation of our target languages. |

The Philosophy of Ruby (Oct 16 2003 03:59 GMT) - Yukihiro Matsumoto, the creator of the Ruby programming language, talks with Bill Venners about Ruby's design philosophy, including design imperfection, the danger of orthogonality, and the importance of the human in computer endeavors. Rather than discussing Ruby features in particular, Yukihiro Matsumoto explains the principles that guided him in the design of Ruby. Interestingly OO is never mentioned (perhaps it's taken for granted). An interesting quote: Yukihiro Matsumoto: |

Don't ever do this to me (Oct 16 2003 03:57 GMT) - Terri Schiavo has been in a persistent vegetative state for 13 years, while her husband fought to turn off the life support and her parents fought to keep it going. She had a heart attack at age 26 -- she's spent fully a third of her life in a coma. Her husband says she would never have wanted to remain alive in such a state. I certainly would want the machines turned off if that happened to me.I hope they finally allow the poor woman to die. |
