Poets' poll crowns Larkin king of verse (Oct 16 2003 14:59 GMT) - Charles Davis writes "from story at The Guardian. Philip Larkin has survived his brief exile from literary fashion as a middle-aged misanthrope with too pronounced a taste for pornography, to emerge unreservedly as the poetry buff's favourite poet of the past 50 years. He has triumphantly kicked his rival Ted Hughes, who was appointed poet laureate when Larkin refused the post, into second place. Hughes's wife, Sylvia Plath, came equal second with her husband. These were among the results yesterday of a poll of several thousand poetry readers held jointly by the Poetry Book Society and the Poetry Library to mark their 50th anniversaries" |

Today is Boss's Day (Oct 16 2003 14:58 GMT) - Don't forget to be especially nice to the person who torments you all year long. A card would be particularly nice if you can find one that has the correct sentiment, perhaps something along the lines of "Who the fuck do you think you are, you mean-spirited, uncouth bastard [or bitch, if your boss is female]? Don't you understand I have a family and things to do that aren't connected to your quarterly and annual plans? You would if you had a heart instead of that coal-stoked furnace in your chest!" |

Very interest comment from the ... (Oct 16 2003 14:58 GMT) - Very interest comment from the NME on their SMS services: "More specific services attract and retain more users...so band specific news was much more popular. One thing we learned is that we need to check news/events/trends in the new arena and become more responsive to a trend." Once again, this harks back to the idea that addressing lots of small niches can be more worthwhile than paying disproportionate amounts for big-name deals. |

Keeping it old school (Oct 16 2003 14:57 GMT) - Scott Kirsner of FastCompany says what a lot of people are probably feeling and what execs at Nokia, Sony Ericsson, and Samsung really don't want to hear: that he doesn't need a fancy new cellphone and that he's perfectly happy with the handset he has now:Want to tick off the CEO of Nokia? Tell him how much you love your no-frills, bottom-of-the-line cell phone. Last year, when I ran into Jorma Ollila, chief executive of the world's largest cell-phone maker, I did just that. |
