French Court Fines Google Over Trademarks (Oct 16 2003 22:59 GMT) - What is it about French courts and American search companies? It wasn't that long ago that they were declaring Yahoo's CEO a war criminal because he wouldn't stop the American Yahoo site from selling old Nazi paraphernalia. Now, they've struck out at Google for the practice of letting people buy text ad keywords for trademarked terms. Google says they're going to appeal. What I find amusing about this is that Google, in the past, has shown that they have no problem banning trademarked keywords. |

Wired Magazine: Open Source Everywhere (Oct 16 2003 22:57 GMT) - This Wired article by Thomas Goetz includes: Finding the roots of open source in Taylor and Smith is especially significant because the approach isn't, as some insist, anticommercial or anticorporate. Rather, it is a return to basic free-market principles. The open source process fosters competition, creativity, and enterprise. And just as Taylor and Smith provided the intellectual grounding for the revolution in mass production, open source offers the mechanism to mass innovation. |

Palm doubts that Microsoft can succeed in cell phone industry (Oct 16 2003 22:57 GMT) - What is one of the first things that happens when a competitor, such as Microsoft, enters into a market? FUD. Cell phone companies are nervous about loosing marketshare to Microsoft with the introduction of SmartPhones. "Microsoft won't support the product longterm" and "SmartPhones are closed systems" tags to the press will help persuade some people to dismiss Microsoft's product initiative and not look beyond the competitive message.
