Murphy's laws of libraries (Oct 17 2003 00:38 GMT) - Shamelessly copied from the IFLA website, via Library Mistress: When 60% of your book order is back-ordered, you can safely bet that 90% of the back-orders are out of print. A "missing" encyclopedia will remain missing until the replacement you ordered is placed on the shelf. When a teacher recommends a library book to a student, you can be certain that the teacher has checked out the only copy and has lent it to a friend in Peru. If you have lost one issue of a magazine there will be 35 students who will require that issue. |

Phew! (Oct 17 2003 00:38 GMT) - Kelley and I have a jam-packed schedule of activities today, including a visit to the macadamia nut farm, three different beaches to see, shave ice for the boys, and a hunt for the perfect sarong. The Venomous Hubby has kindly agreed to stay home again this evening once the kids are in bed, so we'll also be heading out to have dinner together before looking for a new place to perform drunken karaoke. Meanwhile, we have about 45 pictures for you but all of them either need red-eye correction or adjustment of the brightness/contrast. I managed to get the photo software figured out today, so look for more pics tonight. As for the Snark Hunt... |

iTunes 4.1 (Oct 17 2003 00:37 GMT) - There are bad days for Apple devotees and there are good days. This was a good day. Which other company can make you laugh with their ads, saying things like Hell froze over and boldly announcing The best Windows app ever? And then you shrug and think – Um, happy Windows users. |

On-line Publishing in the 21st Century (Oct 17 2003 00:35 GMT) - Nice article about the contradictions between traditional publication models and the possibilities inherent in the web. The two mix together, notes the author, about as well as oil and water. So long as they see no role for themselves, publishers will continue to complain (incorrectly) that the new distribution model is flawed. But their role post-internet is becoming clearer. "Consumers and authors alike have much to gain from the free exchange of knowledge, especially with regard to the intellectual satisfaction of rapidly impacting the growth of enlightenment... |

Traffic Overwhelms New Online Science Journal (Oct 17 2003 00:35 GMT) - Imagine. An academic journal on the subject of biology gets a million hits in a single day. Biology, even! In what may mark the most popular day in the history of the subject, the Public Library of Science Biology journal, the first to be launched by PLoS, was swamped by the widespread interest on its first day. As the story notes, "One reason the journal has generated so much attention is a report it contains about brain implants in monkeys that enable them to control a robotic arm with their thoughts. |

Recently Released, Single Word Domains via RSS (Oct 17 2003 00:35 GMT) - Through the process of creeping featurism what started off with me manually downloading a text file containing the current days worth of expired domains and then greping them against the built in dictionary on FreeBSD to find those expired domains containing a single, dictionary term has been automated and can now be consumed by one and all as an RSS feed. Gives new meaning to learning a word a day. (Meryl) |

Audiobooks on the iTunes store (Oct 17 2003 00:33 GMT) - Not only does apple release a kick butt version of their iTunes store, but they also announced the availability of Audible.com's Audiobooks on the store. Thankful (Oct 17 2003 00:33 GMT) - My son, Ethan (aka EC), had successful surgery done today to remove a hernia and a mole that he had since birth. A Celebration over Supreme Court Inaction! (Oct 17 2003 00:31 GMT) - OK, I was impressed with the Chicago Sun Times editorial I reported yesterday regarding the Supreme Court's refusal to take on the government's appeal regarding doctors and medical marijuana. What I didn't realize was how widespread this was. It seems we have reached a point in the government's insane harrassment, that people have been waiting for a moment of rationality. Tonight, I'm letting the editorial writers speak. Here's just a sample of what's in the editorial pages around the country: |
