In the aggregators session on ... (Oct 17 2003 02:21 GMT) - In the aggregators session on Day 2 at BloggerCon I promised Jenny Levine that I would write up my plan to empower librarians and scholars to build distributed Yahoo-like directories, with the key ingredient that makes the Web work so well -- competition. The idea is for geeks and librarians to work together, a dream of mine for a long time. As with weblogs and newspapers (see the Markoff interview below) the technology I propose would work equally well for librarians who work at Yahoo, as it would for those who don't. It's a decentralized application of OPML in all its glory. [Scripting News] |

CLI for noobies: alias cat and pipe meet grep (Oct 17 2003 02:20 GMT) - [Meerkat: An Open Wire Service] - There has been such a heavy emphasis on making Linux more Windows-like in the past couple of years -- not to mention the really impressive work done on Linux desktop GUI environments by open source projects such as GNOME and KDE -- that command-line usage and tools have been relegated by many to second-tier status. That's a shame. A big part of Linux's siren call to weary Windows users over the years has been its power, and nowhere is this power more evident than at the command line. |

iTunes Music Store for Windows (Oct 17 2003 02:19 GMT) - Apple has released iTunes for Windows and with it comes the ability to access the iTunes Music Store (BTW, here's a LinkMaker for songs in the store. There's been a lot of speculation that Apple has waited too long to have a chance against the Windows competition, but since AOL is putting an iTMS button on their interface, I'd say not. Oh, and the fact that Apple is teaming up with Pepsi to give away 100, 000 free downloads starting in February looks pretty good too. |
