The death of the PDA? (Oct 17 2003 05:33 GMT) - It's become fashionable lately to declare the demise of the PDA, and the Economist is the latest to jump on the bandwagon, or at least they appear to in the headline of the article. But if you read the piece all the way through, they actually concede that it's really more a matter of opinion and that whether or not the PDA is truly dead depends on how broadly define the smartphone. Evidence against the 'first past the post' election system (Oct 17 2003 05:33 GMT) - Here in Canada, the two right wing parties are planning to merge: "The Progressive Conservative" and "The Canadian Alliance" are to become "The Canadian Conservative Party" (or some such name like that). The parties don't have an option of just cooperating, they basically have to merge, it's a move of desperation: The parties appear to hate each other, but analysts have informed them that unless they combine their votes they will lose most of their current seats in parliament in the coming election. In effect, the British / North American "first past the post" election system is forcing the parties to merge. |

The San Francisco Apple Store is bein... (Oct 17 2003 05:32 GMT) - The San Francisco Apple Store is being constructed now that they've finished demolishing the Sephora. I think it's supposed to be finished next Spring. Fortunately, I can get my fix at the Bay Street Apple Store in Emeryville. =-)I probably won't be hitting up an Apple Store on the 24th though. Got birthday plans. |

Reconsidering Search (Kinda) in the AtomAPI. (Oct 17 2003 05:31 GMT) - Of all the facets of the AtomAPI, the search mechanism has caused the most angst. Indeed there is a whole page dedicated to discussing just this facet on the wiki. The search mechanism has gone through many changes and at this point I would like to re-introduce the search mechanism from the RESTLog API. Actually, to call it a seach mechanism is really the wrong word, it is really a structured mechanism for browsing the archives of a site. In the case of the RESTLog Archive interface, the form and function of the browsing is completely under the control of the server. |

BitPorn (Oct 17 2003 05:31 GMT) - Okay, Tim Bray has posted one of the more amusing entries I've read in a while: Debbie Does BitTorrent. So I clicked "Go" and BitTorrent connected to fifteen "peers" and began to slog through Debbie at an average of about 30K/second, and pretty soon began to upload to others at about twice that. Then it did the time estimate and told me it would be done in six hours or so, so I went to bed. When the alarm went... |

Atkins update -- down 37, again (Oct 17 2003 05:28 GMT) - I haven't posted about Atkins in a while, but I feel like I'm still learning. My lowest weight achieved in the 11 months since I started Atkins was 220-222, in early to mid-July. I binged for 2 weeks on vacation, and gained 13 pounds, then got back to 222, when I decided I would start to wean myself from the program, but I set a threshold weight, 230, that would trigger full Atkins. For a month or more, I found a pretty good equilibrium. I might have a Coke every couple of days, or have pizza at lunch with a... |
