We need barking dogs to fix "The PHP Scalability Myth" (Oct 17 2003 07:43 GMT) - This above link is a great article, but you must be an asphyxiating ostrich burrowed in the sand to say that PHP doesn't scale. It's not that slow a programming language, it has few bottlenecks, and perhaps most important - there are many case studies of large web sites using it for mission critical work (eg. Lufthansa's online booking and Yahoo). However I do feel something is still missing from PHP. Not in the language per se, but in the conceptual overview. |

China in space: Ground control to Colonel Yang - Economist (Oct 17 2003 07:42 GMT) - "AMID an outpouring of national pride, and some mutterings about cost, China this week achieved its long-standing ambition of launching a man into space and returning him successfully to Earth. The country's government hopes that Yang Liwei, the astronaut aboard Shenzhou 5, will inspire a generation of Chinese in much the same way that Yuri Gagarin inspired Russians and Alan Shepard inspired Americans....It is reported to have cost around $2 billion" |

Friends, Identity and Security (Oct 17 2003 07:42 GMT) - Robert Cringely has thought about better ways of proving one's identity, so people don't steal your stuff. Exerpts from the article:"Knowing a Social Security number and a mother's maiden name is pretty much all it takes to loot a U.S. bank account, often without even knowing the number of that account. |

Lockergnomie Michael Angier explores the advantages of this new medium with a short-and-sweet top ten list. He works with Success Net to inform, inspire and empower people to be their best - personally and professionally. Given the status of our own library (which ought to expand any minute now), I thought you'd use this knowledge to move completely over to the 'e' side of the fence. |

useless classes (Oct 17 2003 07:40 GMT) - I have this class with the nice name "internet". And it sucks. It's a standard 5. semester class which I'm doing early because I can afford. Now, that I enjoyed one lecture and quickly looked through the exercises I can honestly say that it is the most useless class I enjoyed in my studies so far. |
