Why should e-mail be free? [Frank Proud] (Oct 17 2003 13:25 GMT) - The explosion of spam is an unpleasant side effect of the development of email and the internet. If you believe the surveys we regularly see on the subject it has major costs in lost prodcutivity and wasted computer storage space. There is always talk of more anti-spam regulation but it is difficult to see it working as the hard-core spammers will just break the rules, while the legitimate businesses suffer more regulation. The reason there is so much spam is that it is pretty near to free to send an email, therefore a much lower response is acceptable than for other forms of marketing such as traditional direct mail. But why should email be free? |
