Anyone interested in free drink and food? [Kevin Davies] (Oct 17 2003 16:19 GMT) - MarketPublic.com is offering a free night out in return for a little feedback about the experience. The agents (ie. you or I) would go to a pub/club/restaurant and make an order (which would consist of food and/or drinks). Once they get home, they fill out a simple questionnaire, send off their receipt and they'll be reimbursed the cost of food and drink. |

Plist Sux0r (Oct 17 2003 16:17 GMT) - The plist xml format used by Apple for config files is a nasty little hack. It holds useful information, but doesn't use XML to anything near its potential. It makes accessing the information with sane XML libraries no more (and maybe less) efficient (measured in coding time) than a simple text key-value database would. Here's how the BoingBoing page's entry in my history file looks. The potential for even knowledgeable (they wrote a web browser) people to not understand more effective ways to represent knowledge in XML is a major weakness of the format. |

What a romance my life has been! -- Napoleon Bonaparte (Oct 17 2003 16:16 GMT) - On October 17, 1815, following The 100 Days and Waterloo, Napoleon Bonaparte arrived on the Island of St Helena, where he would remain until his death (mysterious or otherwise) in 1821. Discovered by the Portuguese in 1502, St Helena had a long and interesting history before Napoleon arrived, but that history was overshadowed by the story of the Emperor's last years, living in captive exile at the simple yet beautiful Longwood House. Victorians had an insatiable interest for information about the remote island. Today, the picturesque Island is a a tiny bit of England in the South Atlantic, where coffee and tourism (indeed, what some might call pilgrimages) are the main sources of income. |

Yesteryear's Video Games (Oct 17 2003 16:15 GMT) - A lot of bloggers have linked to this amusing story about today's kids playing yesterday's console games. Short version: they're boring, they look ugly and they're not fun (the games, not the kids). However, this story omits a very important point that many of us recalled about the "Golden Age" of video games. Namely, consoles did suck, but the coin-op games were brilliant — |
