More on Samsung's new Palm-powered Smartphones (Oct 17 2003 17:22 GMT) - And to add to the overload of posts about Samsung today, MSMobiles has a roundup with details of the South Korean manufacturer's three new Palm-powered smartphones, the SGH-i500, the SPH-i500, and the one everyone has been talking about lately, the SGH-i505. The SGH-i500, which is said to be only for the European market, will be a tri-band GSM/GPRS phone and have a built-in one megapixel digital camera and 32MB of RAM. The SPH-i500 is already out here, and is like the poor American cousin of the SGH-i500: it has only 16MB of RAM, runs an older version of the Palm operating system, and lacks a digital camera. The SGH-i505, which just recently surfaced, has a rotating screen, 32MB of RAM, and a VGA quality digital camera. |

Billion dollar idea anyone? (Oct 17 2003 17:21 GMT) - Tim Draper would like you to post your billion dollar idea here. In a transparent publicity stunt with VidiTel and Santa Cruz Networks (Draper Fisher Jurvetson investments), Tim Draper is putting together an online public pitch forum/contest. I guess they announced this contest at BloggerCon. Funny, the apparent "community-sensitive" VidiCon even created a blog for themselves. Of course, it only has two posts: |

The Ghosts Of Hotspots Past (Oct 17 2003 17:21 GMT) - Okay, there's been a lot of hype around the idea of Voice over WiFi (for which I still can't resist using the term VoWiFi), but this article from London makes some very good points about why VoWiFi-based systems are likely to fail if they don't come up with some sort of "killer app" that makes them different from your everyday mobile phone. As much as I hate the term "killer app", he makes a good point. He compares the idea of VoWiFi to the old CT-2 system in the late 80s, that involved a mobile phone that could only be used at specific "hotspots". Right now, the only real benefit for VoWiFi appears to be routing around the phone company. However, as most mobile phones now offer huge bundles of minutes (to the point that it's basically a flat-rate), the benefit doesn't seem that big. |

Comment: iTunes for Windows (Oct 17 2003 17:21 GMT) - First, "burn to CD, then rip to MP3" is no better than cross-encoding, because you still take one imperfect version and turn it into another, which generally causes some very strange and unexpected audio glitches. (Oh, and it means I waste 1000 CDs in the process.) Second, there'd be no reason for me to record them to CD, since I own the CDs I ripped them from. I'm not a music thief. Third, if you think I'm going to re-rip 1000 CDs to get them into MP3, just so I can use iTunes, you must have me confused with the crack addict down the street. |

Fijians apologise for ancestors eating English missionary (Oct 17 2003 17:21 GMT) - Fijians apologise for ancestors eating English missionary Ananova - Fijian villagers are to offer a traditional apology to the descendants of an English missionary who was killed and eaten 136 years ago. The Rev Thomas Baker, of the London Missionary Society, was killed by the people of Navatusila in 1867 for taking a comb out of a chief's hair, reports The Pacific Islands News Association. It was and still is forbidden to touch the head of a chief and he was subsequently cooked and eaten. The inhabitants of the remote Fiji mountain village believe they have been cursed for what their forefathers did and the district chief has invited Mr Baker's descendants to a ceremony to apologise. No word on who they will be serving for dinner... |

Staring Down LinuxInformation Week - On ... (Oct 17 2003 17:18 GMT) - Staring Down LinuxInformation Week - On a warm September day at Manhattan's upscale St. Regis hotel, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates stepped onto a makeshift stage with IBM senior VP Steve Mills to demonstrate what Mills would describe as a "breakthrough" in software engineering. With the Windows operating system and Microsoft's SQL Server database running on one computer and a Linux operating system and IBM's DB2 database on another, the competitors showed how Web services could be used to conduct secure transactions across their disparate systems. |
