Seize the Moment (Oct 17 2003 21:59 GMT) - Many progressive Americans sense that we are at a watershed moment in our relationship to the mainstream media. Progressive media outlets themselves feel that they, too, may be at a turning point. The media reform movement, spearheaded by Bob McChesney and others, aroused only marginal passion several years ago but it took off like a rocket in 2003 as a result of unprecedented FCC ... iTunes Links And News (Oct 17 2003 21:59 GMT) - From the Apple Link Dump department: Apple has released an iTunes Link Maker to enable anyone to easily create HTML links to individual songs albums or artists. They've got some fancy code to detect the presence of iTunes on the system, but I'd rather just provide a link for you to download iTunes, and then the links will work for everybody. If only they would provide a way to link directly to the "Just Added" page, I'd be truly happy. Oh yeah, you can right-click on most links within the iTMS and get the URL as well, even for Audiobooks and authors. |

Brilliant! (Oct 17 2003 21:59 GMT) - Mark-Steffen Göwecke's Polaroid photography is such a brilliant concept, I weep not to have thought of it myself:All began in 1996 in Bretany, France: On a beach I photographed with a the SX-70 a polaroid showing sand and stones. Again the resulting picture was photographed with the Polaroid-camera. The distances in space and time became greater. |

Ted Nugent isn't the only bowhunter in the world (Oct 17 2003 21:58 GMT) - Officials in Maryland are trying to "control the size of the herds", and sadly they're not talking about Sport Utility Vehicles, they're talking about deer, and sadlier still, they've decided that the most efficient way to deal with this problem is to allow bowhunting, because it's so efficient. 11 deer have been killed so far, and 3 others have been wounded but "unrecovered". The "deer hunting project director" points out that woundings happen in gun-based hunting as well, as if that makes it all better. At least I can finally use the pictures that Dave Noisy sent in a while back... (While no non-human animals are harmed in the photos, you might not want to view them within an hour of a meal. |

The Candidates on the Media (Oct 17 2003 21:57 GMT) - Perhaps it’s surprising that most Democratic candidates are now speaking out on media ownership and deregulation of the public airwaves. It may be less surprising that most of their positions became known only after a grassroots campaign highlighted the public’s discontent with the FCC vote last June to further deregulate the media. Either way, after decades of regulation rollbacks, ownership concentration and commercialism of news, issues that progressives have been... |

New LEGO Catalogue (Oct 17 2003 21:57 GMT) - Check out the US shop@home portal at LEGO, which sports the new holiday catalogue for 2003. It has a nifty interactive feature and plenty of Star Wars items - including a re-released TIE Fighter (though LEGO has mistakenly pictured a Darth Vader TIE Fighter). |

Friday Cat Blogging (Oct 17 2003 21:57 GMT) - Caracals Animal control officers in Prince William County, Maryland have captured a caracal that had confronted a German Shepherd. The dog probably had no clue what the heck this thing was. Its a rather unusual-looking cat. Caracals are native to South. |

Credibility and the Blogger-Journalist Spectrum (Oct 17 2003 21:56 GMT) - Frankly, for years now I've been fairly annoyed at the attitude I get from many of my colleagues from mainstream media. These are the journalists, editors, and publishers who blithely dismiss online or independent journalism as inherently lacking in credibility. Not only is that belief inaccurate and counterproductive, it's shortsighted. I'd like to call to your attention a fabulous posting in one of my very favorite Weblogs, Phil Wolff's A Klog Apart. Check out the Oct. |

And here is Condi Rice lying just for the hell of it: Through the Looking Glass: Condi Rice said, in May, 2002: I don't think anybody could have predicted that these people would take an airplane and slam it into the World Trade Center, take another one and slam it into the Pentagon; |

Update on iTunes (Oct 17 2003 21:54 GMT) - In June I spoke with somebody at Apple regarding making our new CD nouveaumatic available on iTunes before we would release it in September. I thought getting the new album on iTunes would be pretty easy, especially since the iTunes store already sells many of my albums and more are to follow since I agreed to make the music from my Higher Octave CDs available as well. I was sent an application form for independent record labels, which I filled out and returned more than three months ago. I have emailed a couple of contacts at Apple several times and have yet to find out about the status of the application. Needless to say I am disappointed by the way iTunes is handling this matter and I have no idea when, if ever nouveaumatic will be available on iTunes. |

Breathing easier
