Their efforts have borne some fruit, mobilizing considerable opposition to a Federal Communications Commissions ruling that loosens limits on the number of stations a single company may own. On September 17 the Senate passed a full rollback of the FCC ruling. But this sharp, almost exclusive focus on corporate ownership has drowned out other crucial concerns in the struggle for... |

A Timely Bug (Oct 17 2003 21:23 GMT) - I'm a sucker for quirky bugs. Recently, I've been hacking around with PhlIp's excellent Mini Ruby Wiki (more on that later), and discovered one such bug. There's a block of code in MiniRubyWiki that renders a small calendar in HTML, not unlike your typical blog calendar widget. Here's a small subset (the actual code is more interesting that this) which is largely although not completely unchanged from the original miniWiki.rb source. |

Gadgets (Oct 17 2003 21:23 GMT) - Nothing of import to say today, got some stepper motors doing stress testing in the other room while I play around with AVR-GCC and see if I can get my servo code ported to C for easier maintenance and some more interesting acceleration curves. So for lack of anything better: I ran into Christopher at _San Anselmo Coffee Roasters_ last Saturday, and I think we were both still pretty happy with our respective laptops. Public, Private, Secret (Oct 17 2003 21:23 GMT) - For quite a while I've tried to keep Flutterby away from the "weblog meta" crowd, staying away from in jokes, staying away from the politics of RSS... err... RSS... I mean RSS. And I think a lot of the modern "weblogs will transform the world" stuff is hoohey. |

Spin (Oct 17 2003 21:21 GMT) - Dave Fester at Microsoft (via Matt Deatherage): iTunes captured some early media interest with their store on the Mac, but I think the Windows platform will be a significant challenge for them. Unless Apple decides to make radical changes to their service model, a Windows-based version of iTunes will still remain a closed system, where iPod owners cannot access content from other services. Additionally, users of iTunes are limited to music from Apple’s Music Store. |

It's a feature. (Oct 17 2003 21:21 GMT) - The thing I love about using Word as my e-mail editor is, if I do it just right (although how I do it just right is still a mystery), I can get Outlook and all my open Word documents to lock up at the same time. |
