Smart Crowds (Oct 17 2003 22:36 GMT) - Howard Rheingold dropped by in his signature red-purple-hat suit for an interesting talk today at UCSB to kick off CITS fall lecture series. Broaching a crowd with enough collected gray matter to conquer the world half a dozen times over, for 40 minutes he delved into and tangentized off his most recent book, Smart Mobs, before an informative 20 minute QnA session. Lots of profound stuff flying around, but as a nice change of pace, slightly optimistic to what the convergence of the internet and cellphone is going to bring us. One of the salient points was that users have more power than consumers, so average guy chooses to learn the tools, they can increasingly determine their own information-sphere and, in a sense, their lives. Though he hinted we are still early in the process, and 40+'s probably wouldn't "get" this, the alleged gains would manifest for the ambivilent 20-30 somethings, and the excited youth who are scurrying out to get there new Pokeman branded cell-camera-pda-internet-pong playing doohicky's. |
