The Pending Wallet Phone (Oct 19 2003 01:58 GMT) - i-mode is currently the world's most popular platform for mobile Internet and e-mail. Launched in February 1999 in Japan, it currently has a subscriber base of nearly 40 million. Outlining the aim of the wallet phone, Mr Hisashi Hamada of the company told Business Line that using this, a subscriber of i-mode services could "consolidate all his smart cards that he carries in his wallet such as credit cards, club membership cards or bus/train passes into a single chip in the mobile phone." Explaining its features, Mr Hamada said: ``The smart card details such as club membership cards or credit cards of a subscriber of I-mode service are first embedded and stored on an IC chip on the mobile phone. |

Fat-Free Blogging (Oct 19 2003 01:57 GMT) - I haven't run out of things to blog about, just time in which to do it. This week has been a struggle, including with my old friend WebLogic, which is wired to itself with a certain concupiscent onanism (yes, I ripped that pairing of terms from a certain JBoss-related blog) such that it could be referred to as "tightly coupled" -- to itself of course (hence the onanism.) It's a long story, but needless to say, it gave us a challenge to plug in the clustered ServletContext implementation. Further, it's application ClassLoader implementation is suicidal -- literally! It refuses to load classes when an application is stopped, which is all fine and dandy if your classes are already loaded, but if parts of the shutdown occur asynchronously, and the asynchronous parts happen to touch something that isn't loaded, then watch out. |

Yesterday was Dennis's "Celebration of ... (Oct 19 2003 01:53 GMT) - Yesterday was Dennis's "Celebration of Life" service at Otter Lake - a lovely lake way out in the woods at the North end of Fort Richardson. It was a gorgeous crystal clear cold day - the lake was glass smooth and the water perfectly reflected the snow dusted mountains. And why is my description so detailed? Well, when I arrived at the lodge, I walked in and there was a large wonderful picture of Dennis. That was when the reality of his death hit - and hit hard. |

Deja Vu: Cherchez la Femmes (Oct 19 2003 01:46 GMT) - Maxine is righteously angry about the election of Schwarzenegger to office, in spite of the many unresolved claims of sexual and physical abuse and harassment by the governor-elect. One of our regular commentors, Dave, has many doubts about the claims; the timing of the claims makes them suspect in his eyes. |
