That Forbes Article (Oct 19 2003 23:14 GMT) - Open Source: Forbes: Linux's Hit Men. The dispute, which was leaked to an Internet message board, offers a rare peek into the dark side of the free software movement--a view that contrasts with the movement's usual public image of happy software proles linking arms and singing the 'Internationale' while freely sharing the fruits of their code-writing labor. (Here we go again -- the old 'free software is communism' line, cf. |

The Future of Search (Oct 19 2003 23:14 GMT) - It's interesting how search suddenly got to be one of the hottest Internet businesses. David Krane from Google likes to tell a story of Larry and Sergey's visit to some major Internet players before settling on their own project. Back then the major sites were in the portal game: provide a start page from which consumers browse to other featured and sponsored locations and—provided you had enough eyeballs and stickiness (both are still part of the Internet marketing lingo)—you were all set... |

Leaving Becky (Oct 19 2003 23:13 GMT) - For quite a long time (ever since I outgrew Spry Mail) I was a user and evangelist for Becky (aka Rebecca), an excelent mail client from a (I think) small company in Japan. I still think it is a great software, with very useful features you can't find anywhere else, but I recently switched to Thunderbird both at home and at work. And here's why. Becky is not open source (it's not free, either, but this is not a problem for me; I bought a license years ago, and it was a good buy), and it seems to suffer from what I call the "lone developer syndrome". |

Night Game on Saturday (Oct 19 2003 23:13 GMT) - CU vs OU will be a night game at Folsom Field, kicking off at 5:00 PM mountain time. It will be televised nationally on TBS. I bet there will be a sellout this weekend, although about half of the stands will probably be wearing Sooner Red. I guess a night game is something to look forward to because if it gets too bad, we can just turn off the lights and not watch the team get massacred. |

Autoblock (Oct 19 2003 23:10 GMT) - This Blosxom plugin automatically wraps various types of blocks in useful HTML tags. The plugin currently supports paragraph, blockquotes, and code fragments (and other types are planned for the future). The goal is to be able to write articles in plain-text, using a simple (and obvious) markup that results in CSS-able HTML. This is similar to the Textism Textile plugin and the Restructured text document processor. UK/Personal: An ordinary Sunday (Oct 19 2003 23:10 GMT) - It's Sunday and the leader-writers have nothing better to do than opine endlessly about the homosexuality in the church issue. Meanwhile, life amongst the congregations goes on much as normal. If I was to be honest, we all had a little bit of a giggle on Wednesday night at the idea of a meeting of primates. Childish, I know, but it's a symptom of how irrelevant the whole affair can seem to the ordinary person. Our service went ahead, with no reference to the doings of the Anglican church this morning, as you'd expect from a free church. |
