The Enterprise Metadata Nut: Cracked? (Oct 20 2003 01:57 GMT) - In my take on enterprise information architecture, enterprise-wide metadata development is the most ambitious, "way off" component of the architecture. It's Really Hard to get different business units to agree to a single metadata schema. It's Really, Really Hard to get them to then populate those metadata attributes with semantically consistent values. I've already yammered on this topic in a past Bloug entry, so I won't get into it further here. However, I can at least offer you ... |

iRate radio (Oct 20 2003 01:57 GMT) - Since eMusic has no shot it self in the foot and destroyed what made the service interesting, I've been looking at the other sources of legal independent music. Over the weekend I started playing with iRate. This is a pretty cool concept, with a kinda weak implementation. The concept is... |

Carnivorous coffee (Oct 20 2003 01:56 GMT) - I don't know why this morning is different from any other, but the coffee I drank on the way to work this morning has grown claws and long, sharp fangs, and is slowly but surely chewing its way out of my stomach. Ugh. I think I'd better throw a honeybun or a bearclaw down there. Maybe it will act as a buffer... |

Is persistence becoming a commodity.. (Oct 20 2003 01:54 GMT) - Several announcements such as this one Big Blue retools database pricing | CNET News.com are pointing in the direction of databases becoming a commodity. The next step is just making persistence a part of the information flow. One of the major advantages of XML and XML Schema is that they are all readable and can be persisted in a single step from the information flow. This is a disadvantage for the database vendors as they have profited from the complexity of storage. |

Heroin money could fund Kashmir's militants - Christian Science Monitor (Oct 20 2003 01:54 GMT) - "Kashmir's growing narcotics trade is flourishing in areas where militants are most active....most active narcotics smugglers are well-armed Kashmiri militants, who use narcotics as a business to pay for their violent activities, and who have a tradition of fighting to the death....The militants get involved in narcotics for two main reasons. One is to give to their fighters during suicide attacks, to give them courage and to take away the pain. The second reason is fundraising. |
