Owning Mahowny (Oct 20 2003 04:32 GMT) - 196. Owning Mahowny (2003, Richard Kwietniowski). In this wonderfully understated drama Philip Seymour Hoffman absolutely disappears into his role as Dan Mahowny, a mild-mannered Canadian bank worker who also happens to be a compulsive gambler. One of my favorite movies... |

A conservative's review of Al Franken's 'Lies and the Lying Liars' (Oct 20 2003 04:28 GMT) - he leaders we conservatives have trusted have taken advantage of our trust to line the pockets of the wealthy and powerful, and it's time we rose up and drove out these greedy liars. They've hijacked and distorted our belief system for their own gain, and in doing so are destroying our credibility. And if we decent, honest, hard-working, patriotic, true-blue conservatives of this country neglect the duty we have to our children and grandchildren, we will never be able to work with those decent, honest, hard-working, patriotic, true-blue liberal Americans that these lying creeps have taught us to despise. We will never be safe to debate them or, when warranted, to listen to them and maybe even agree with them. We will never be safe to work out our differences or to work together. |

The Pope's tailor (Oct 20 2003 04:27 GMT) - From the Globe and Mail: The Pope's new socks. ROME — When Quebec Archbishop Marc Ouellet got the word from the Vatican three weeks ago that he is among 31 new cardinals the pope will soon appoint, one of the first things he did was call his tailor. The call went to Gammarelli, a historic Roman shop just around the corner from the Pantheon that has been providing vestments to popes and cardinals for more than 200 years. |

Furry Fury (Oct 20 2003 04:26 GMT) - There's stuff going down in som_pos about furries -- and all over, it seems. Is this Silly Season? Well, actually, it's a little late to be putting my words in, as the topic's now banned in som_pos at risk of kobold's wrath. But Ghastly had that comic, and Something Positive had Cthulu settling the argument, and then I hear from elynne that there was a thing in a community that made LJDrama. So. |

Global Crossing Being Sought By PLA (Oct 20 2003 04:24 GMT) - Project Double Crossing Did the highest levels of Washington and Wall Street conspire to hand over Global Crossing to China’s army? On September 19, 2003, our President Bush personally agreed to allow a company owned by the government of Singapore to take ownership of what is possibly America’s most strategic telecommunications firm. The CIA had recently made public its investigations of the Singapore government company’s business partner, a Chinese controlled empire under one of China’s most powerful men, Li Kai-Shing. Interestingly, it is illegal to sell a telecommunications provider to an entity controlled by a foreign government, especially to one so enmeshed in China’s sphere of influence. More The main thrust in these few last weeks before Global Crossing exits the Southern District of NY’s bankruptcy court (case presided by Judge Gerber), is that even in bankruptcy willful misrepresentation of income and revenue very possibly has occurred. |
