Dairy by Dave (Oct 20 2003 06:54 GMT) - Alright, we just got back from Canzine, which rocked, but I can barely form words right now, so here's some stuff from Dave Noisy to tide you over until tomorrow morning. North America is about to be bombarded with advertising about weight control through dairy consumption. Monopoly National Championships, World Scrabble Championships (Oct 20 2003 06:53 GMT) - See the Hasbro Monopoly game web site for details of the crazy Monopoly National Championship. Even though the highly skilled players say it's upwards of 75% luck, they still duke it out for a highly prized trip to the world championships. Sounds like fun. But nowhere near as cool as the upcoming World Scrabble(R) Championships in Malaysia! Play starts on Tuesday. |

Open Source Everywhere (Oct 20 2003 06:52 GMT) - I have a ton of magazines strewn across my office. Over the last year or so, I've been letting my subscriptions to various magazines lapse because I realize that I no longer read them. But it's hard to let go of some. I still get Wired, although I periodically wonder if I should let it lapse. I pondered that question again when the November issue arrived. |

Post-Reception Report (Oct 20 2003 06:51 GMT) - We had the memorial reception for Mom yesterday. About 75 people attended, and everyone seemed to think that it struck the right chord of informality and non-sombreness. In truth, it wasn't particularly emotional for me. I'd already said my goodbyes,... |

Takes Five: Barbara Ehrenreich (Oct 20 2003 06:47 GMT) - Barbara Ehrenreich's 2001 book, "Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America," became a bestseller and has been adapted into a stage play. Ehrenreich, a journalist and social critic with a doctorate in biology and 12 other books to her credit, spent two years working in jobs that paid $6 and $7 an hour to see how low-paid workers get by. In Key West, she worked as a waitress. In Maine, she was a maid for a cleaning agency. |
