update (Oct 20 2003 07:59 GMT) - *sigh* I should have been in bed a while ago but I'm feeling a bit of mania. At least something good came out of it... cleaned up part of the living room finally. I'm already feeling better. I keep feeling... |

Blogger News Item (Oct 20 2003 07:58 GMT) - Massachusetts says Goodbye to Redmond Massachusetts adopting open-source software! Massachusetts Administration and Finance Secretary Eric Kriss last month instructed the state's chief technology officer to adopt a policy of "open standards, open source" for all future spending on information technology. The directive likely won't completely cut out Microsoft from the state's $80-million technology budget. But it may be the clearest example yet of a state government taking sides against Microsoft in the software industry's most important struggle. I plan to get a Linux computer soon and network to my PC net. |

Blogger News Item (Oct 20 2003 07:58 GMT) - Brian's Buzz Brian's Buzz, a website and newsletter about Windows by one of the best in the business, has been detailing just how bad things are in the world of Windows security holes and endless patches. Oct 2. Exploit of broken MS patch is 'in the wild' I reported in a previous newsletter that a critical Microsoft security patch does not actually close the hole it was intended to correct. Flawed patch MS03-032 continues to allow attackers to silently install and run malicious programs on PCs that merely visit an infected Web page. |

Blogger News Item (Oct 20 2003 07:58 GMT) - Bolivian peasants kick serious ass! The exiled former president of Bolivia, holed up in a hotel in Miami, yesterday spoke of the "shock and shame" he felt after being forced to resign and of his fears for the future of the South American country. He was exiled because hundreds of thousands of peasants marched many miles to the capital city and then shut the city down -- which overturned his corrupt regime. While the Bushies are embroiled in the sinkhole that is Iraq, South American countries have been veering sharply to the left. |

Blogger News Item (Oct 20 2003 07:58 GMT) - Cluck cluck cluck Plans for the Queen and George W Bush to make a triumphant procession along the Mall during the president's state visit next month have been abandoned because of fears of anti-war protests. President Bush's trip is the first full state visit of an American president since the Queen came to the throne 52 years ago. He will travel by helicopter to avoid protesters who line road routes. Other proposed events have also been curtailed or cancelled, and he will not address Parliament because of fears of a boycott by MPs. May it happen here one day! |

Blogger News Item (Oct 20 2003 07:58 GMT) - Should we pray for these unbelievers? 'No health benefit' from prayer The world's largest study into the effects of prayer on patients undergoing heart surgery has found it appears to make no difference. The MANTRA study, run from Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina, involved 750 patients. Before their operations, they were randomly split into two groups, and half were prayed for by Christians, Jews, Buddhists and Muslims. However, checks revealed they had fared no better than those not prayed for. |

New virus? (Oct 20 2003 07:57 GMT) - Looks like there might be a new virus doing the rounds as I've received several bounces where i'm the "reply to" field in the email. The body of the email contains different subjects, so far i've had "your password", sophos virus removal tools, ie6 patch etc... The good news is that I think I know who got infected with this one. |

N.J. Town Has Fun With Speed Limit Signs (Oct 20 2003 07:57 GMT) - The familiar black and white speed limit signs in some rural parts of Burlington County aren't getting drivers to slow down. They're also not getting any laughs. Officials believe new signs going up on a few roads should do both. The signs include messages like "Free Speeding Tickets Ahead" and "Meet Our Judge - Exceed 25 mph." |

BBC News Biased? (Oct 20 2003 07:54 GMT) - The Tulsa NPR affiliate plays BBC news at night. I heard this just a few minutes ago: "His son is glued to the new playstation as he looks on. He was a soldier under Sadaam, but has since been unemployed." The reporter then segues into the standard "he wants the US to leave" bit. |
