The DRM Triple Threat (Oct 20 2003 15:31 GMT) - Glanz writes "Digital Rights Management or DRM is an umbrella term being used to describe a number of technologies that place limits on what can be done with digital information. DRM prevents you from copying data unless you have the right key and the right software to unlock the data. DRM is strongly advocated by the corporations behind the various DRM programs, focusing on its benefits but purposefully sidestepping DRM's downside. This piece will highlight how steep the downside can be by focusing on three threats posed by DRM technologies." |

The Unified Software Development Process (Oct 20 2003 15:30 GMT) - This is not a review of the book Extreme Programming Refactored: The Case Against XP, because I haven't read it. But it is a review of a review. Or a response to a review. Or some comments on a review. |

Cosmopolitan: A Bartender's Life (Oct 20 2003 15:30 GMT) - Sunday ReadingTwo non-political books I've got to get ahold of: According to the Rolling Stones and Cosmopolitan: A Bartender's Life. Both are reviewed in the New York Times today. A good review should tell you something interesting about the book, the author, the subject, or all of those things. |

The Ascent of Man (Oct 20 2003 15:30 GMT) - The best (both good and short) explanation that I've seen of the speed of light/relativity business is in Jacob Bronowski's The Ascent of Man on pages 245-256 -- good illustrations, too. The book was published as an accompaniment to Bronowski's superb multipart television series of the same name. (Boston: Little Brown, c1973). |

Talking Photography: Viewpoints on the Art, Craft and Business (Oct 20 2003 15:30 GMT) - From time to time, I am going to go out on a limb and recommend books that are both interesting and useful. While initially they will be about photography, I promise to research books that will interest designers and writers as well. If you are reading this and want to send in your suggestion, I would love to hear from you. Send in your suggestions to me at: seshu[at]pipalproductions[dot] Here is the first of what I hope will be many books you can use: |

The Karma of Brown Folk (Oct 20 2003 15:30 GMT) - Associated with the exhibit is a symposium that promises to discuss the political weight images carry (in the context of the British Raj, of course). Hot topic, in my opinion. How are South Asians perceived now has much to do with how we were photographed in the past. I am sure Vijay Prashad of The Karma of Brown Folk fame has something to say about this. |

The Tao of Abundance (Oct 20 2003 15:30 GMT) - This morning, between scribbling ideas for our farmhouse and stretching in the morning sunshine, I've bounced between the libertarianism forum, an article I found on the The People-Centered Development Forum called "ASSAULT OF THE CORPORATE LIBERTARIANS", and a chapter about commerce and capital in the book The Tao of Abundance: Eight Ancient Principles for Abundant Living by Laurence G. Boldt. Here's a quote from each:emagill wrote, "This is kind of the sticking point for libertarianism. |

Stand on Zanzibar (Oct 20 2003 15:30 GMT) - Same thing as last year. Months preceding I get a buzz about it, looking forward, writing down ideas, sounding out names, places, and plots. I hope this year near the end of November my brain doesn't again act like a well-squeezed sponge where I have to wring all the harder to get that last 5,000 words out.I need to finish Stand on Zanzibar before November comes, too... I borrowed Innis Mode last year, and those were the fun chapters to write. |

The Object of My Affection (Oct 20 2003 15:30 GMT) - So it's been a little over a month now since I got my DVR. Or, more accurately, my Explorer 8000 Home Entertainment Server. And I'm enjoying it, but Im also kinda terrified of it. Doesn't that name sound like a joke from Futurama? I mean, I love tech toys, but there's also a point where I start to get a little creeped out in a Maximum Overdrive sort of way. |

For today's lunch, I ventured across the Pacific and went with a Vietnamese recipe taken from the book Vietnamese Cooking by Paulette Do Van. This one is for you vegans and contrary to popular perception of meatless food, it's quite tasty.Ingredients*1 tbsp. vegetable oil*1 onion, finely chopped*4 cloves of garlic - finely chopped*3 large green chiles, slicedy thinly - the recipes says to seed them but if you do that you lose the kick. |

If the World Were a Village: A Book About the World's People (Oct 20 2003 15:30 GMT) - This limitation of human cognition holds true to some degree for all large number constructions. Grand concepts are easier to comprehend when scaled. For instance it is difficult to understand the real meaning of the fact that 60 percent of the 6 billion people on the Earth are undernourished. Sure, it sounds like a big bad number, but it doesn't resonate in a way that is personal and palpable. Scale the world population down to an imaginary village of 100 as David J. |

Thomas Guide 2004 Los Angeles County Street Guide (Oct 20 2003 15:30 GMT) - The idea is perhaps best explained in an analogy of driving the freeways in Los Angeles. You move mono-directionally, hopefully - please don't try to back up while driving on the freeway. You drive in one lane at any given moment - once again, hopefully. You can choose to remain in a single lane as you move forward. But who ever does that? |
