Kings of Leon (Oct 20 2003 15:29 GMT) - Last post by Gralefrit on 16:27 20/Oct/03 - What the hell happened to that rumour that the Kings of Leon were nothing more than a good looking bunch of appropriately juvenile front people drafted in to make music written by a shadowy 40-something rock svengali, who then conjured up a preposterous boy band marketing scam along the lines of them being "sons of a preacher man" |

USA Today reviews iTunes for Windows (Oct 20 2003 15:28 GMT) - Jefferson Graham reports on Apple's rushed and buggy attempt at Windows software, without mentioning its failure to follow Windows' user interface conventions. However, he does reckon there is a way out of Apple's lock-in strategy (Apple music store -- Apple-only AAC format -- Apple client software -- Apple iPod): "Burn a CD, then rip the files to MP3. Once that's done, you're free to do anything you want with the file and put it anywhere you want to." |

New Media, 1740-1915 and Genealogia de la Revuelta (Oct 20 2003 15:28 GMT) - From MIT Press there is a new book New Media, 1740-1915 which i'm putting on my wishlist. I never really get around to buying the books on my wishlist, and when i do see them in the bookstores here, they are always in spanish. Although i bet New Media is a pretty straight forward read, most of the stuff i'm interested in gives me headaches when i read them in english. Reading in spanish makes it even worse. Right now i'm struggling through Genealogia de la Revuelta: |

Visual Basic .NET Resource Kit (Oct 20 2003 15:28 GMT) - On hearing about the recent Visual Basic .NET Resource Kit, I must admit to having reservations, in fact my initial reaction was along the lines of: "Hmmmm, just what I need, another 300Mb of hard-drive filler". Anyways, - thankfully - Dan from ADNUG downloaded it and has offered it to members of our group. I'm glad that he did - thanks Dan! |

One of those days (Oct 20 2003 15:27 GMT) - Today's just one long waking siesta, since I'm still very tired. And it shows, doesn't it? I'm conserving my appreciative energies for tonight when Catherine, my former wife, gives me my birthday present. We're going to a performance of Verdi's 'Requiem', conducted by Zubin Mehta. I'd forgotten all about it until she 'phoned last night. |

Popularity (Oct 20 2003 15:27 GMT) - So apparently Outside the Inbox is popular. The server seems to be holding up OK right now, but the traffic is flooding in and I'd like to have a contingency plan. If anyone's got bandwidth they want to offer up for mirrors (or maybe a BitTorrent or something?), please contact me. Thanks so much! |

Private Pensions: a System Going Under? (Oct 20 2003 15:26 GMT) - Excerpt: "[T]he sky is falling for a good number of American workers. Or the ship is sinking. Or any number of other metaphors for looming disaster, all of them applicable to the state of America's private pension system. The country's entire retirement income structure is being battered by an unprecedented wave of demographic and economic changes. |

District Court Rejects Argument That ERISA Prohibits Subrogation By Group Health Plans (PDF) (Oct 20 2003 15:26 GMT) - 3 pages. Excerpt: "The thrust of this decision is that funds may still seek recovery under section 502(a)(3)(C) of ERISA if the suit does not impose personal liability on the participant which means that the funds to be recovered are still identifiable and are preserved in a separate fund and are not in the direct possession of the participant. In addition, ... a plan might be better off seeking recovery under state lien laws, rather than under ERISA ... |

Sweden's Private Pension System Gets a Jolt (Oct 20 2003 15:26 GMT) - Excerpt: "Sweden's new state pension system has received accolades as a model for other countries across Europe. But its private system is facing a crisis. For decades, generous tax breaks have been used to encourage Swedes to save privately for their retirement. The main products have been mutually-run schemes in which investment profits go to policyholders. |

Americans pay more than their fair share for drugs compared with the rest of the industrialized world. We are, in short, paying the research and development bill for so-called single-payer nations such as France and Germany, and Canada, too." (Steve Bailey in the Boston Globe) |
