False claims?. This is not ... (Oct 20 2003 16:23 GMT) - False claims?. This is not so much a tech story as yet another one about statistics being thrown around - statistics that appear to be rather misleading. When I was in the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle (a great zoo too) last spring, the wolf manager, speaking to visitors, said that wolves can bite three times harder than a domestic dog. I asked, "Wouldn't a similar sized domestic dog have a similar skull structure, leverage and power?" She did not know the answer to that and did not know where the "three times more powerful" claim came from. |

Upgrading from Struts 1.1 to Nightly build (Oct 20 2003 16:22 GMT) - I'm upgrading our application at work to the nightly build (20031020) of Struts in order to use the validwhen Validator. I found a few deprecations and errors in the process, so I thought I'd share to help others upgrade easier: ActionError has been deprecated in favor of ActionMessage. Likewise, ActionMessages.GLOBAL_MESSAGE replaces ActionErrors. |

How to decentralize directories (Oct 20 2003 16:21 GMT) - 1. Decide on a format for a directory. It should be XML-based so people can use any text tool to edit them. I designed OPML for this purpose, but if you want to use another format, I won't fight you on it. This is too important to have the usual fight over the bits on the wire. |

Report: Linux Is Sometimes a Pleasant Surprise (Oct 20 2003 16:21 GMT) - Sometimes companies aren't actively seeking Linux for the solution to their problems; sometimes Linux just happens to be the best solution for their needs.
