dragonslayer (Oct 20 2003 19:59 GMT) - While wandering the net, I found a webpage about the dragonslayer sculpture in my hometown, which has been put there since I moved away. What you can't see in this picture is the incredible detail of the dragon. Its scales are actually the backs of stainless steel spoons, for example. It's really cool. |

Roger Corman on Acid (Oct 20 2003 19:59 GMT) - Recently I caught a theatrical showing of "X", aka "The Man with the X-Ray Eyes", followed by a Q&A with B-movie producing legend Corman himself. The film itself is unintentionally funny more often than not, has a few great scenes but is nothing to write home about. Corman, however, is delightfully full of stories n' jokes. Here are some highlights, for your interest: |

Live in London (Oct 20 2003 19:59 GMT) - We're in Smiths of Smithfield, enjoying a pint (maybe two) of Grolsh (that's "beer", which is less deadly than water here) at the London Java Meetup. I am not even going try to put names with faces, but so far we have Jeremy Rayner, Peter Reinhardt, Pratik Patel, Liam Holohan, Richard Atkins, Simon Brown, Steve Heath, Ken Horn, Sam Dalton, Max Kington. I don't know who the other clown is. |

Define Convenient (Oct 20 2003 19:58 GMT) - If you've already been using Google as a dictionary, you'll be pleased to know it now is designed to work that way. Works swell with legal terms too, and the "more definitions" link lets you triangulate. [Via Evan Williams] |

SCSI vs. IDE: Which is really faster? (Oct 20 2003 19:58 GMT) - Is SCSI faster than IDE? Some say SCSI used to be faster, but this isn't true anymore today. Others say SCSI is still the performance leader. I recently decided to enhance my workstation's hard drive, so I decided to do some testing, and I found out just which side is right. |

Museum readying time capsules (Oct 20 2003 19:55 GMT) - It may not be easy to make sense out of a sentence that reads, “Museum set to seal time capsules with a Christmas tree,” unless you were actually there to see it tested. On October 13, Elco Manufacturing Company delivered the Christmas tree to the Kern County Museum in Bakersfield. Only it wasn’t a tall, evergreen covered with pine needles. No, it turns out Christmas tree is a term used to describe a piece of oilfield equipment configured of twisted pipes and valves, standing about seven feet high and weighing close to a ton. |
