Question for PDC and other conference attendees... (Oct 20 2003 23:45 GMT) - Working with the samples for my upcoming pre-conference talk on ASP.NET for the PDC, I got to wondering whether there's a dominant preference among conference attendees regarding how presenters work with code. Do you prefer to have a presenter write the code live, or do you prefer to have the presenter show a pre-written example, and explain how the important parts work? For example, live demos take a lot more work to get right, but I can see some advantage to walking attendees through a process, rather than reviewing code with them. On the other hand, using pre-written demos generally allows for more demos within a given presentation, since inevitably some of the code that would need to be written for a live demo is really not relevant to the concepts being explained. |

Helpline Comment (24133) (Oct 20 2003 23:43 GMT) - Just a little rant here, about Airborne (not so!) express. I bought a 17" V700 Compaq CRT on eBay, and was shipped via Airborne Express last Tuesday(ish). I received the monitor bright and early this morning, only to discover that it had been broken during transit (This was a perfectly working/perfect condition monitor). Not only does the casing of the CRT have a HUGE crack, but the neck of the CRT has broken and just about snapped off entirely. |

What's happening at the NSF? (Oct 20 2003 23:41 GMT) - There is a big reorganization in the CISE directorate of NSF. To understand what's happening, let's review the previous structure.. The National Science Foundation, like most government bureaucracies, has a tree-like structure. At top is the office of the director (Rita Colwell). Below that are several directorates including the Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) headed by Peter Freeman. |

Blaine - a review (as if you'd not had enough already) [ An-shu] (Oct 20 2003 23:41 GMT) - I found myself in the town centre about the time Blaine was coming down, so I wandered down there with my girlfriend to check out the crowd. I have to admit, whatever you might say about Blaine, he's better than Paul Daniels. Granted, it would have been pretty dull if they hadn't been showing the television program on a giant screen, but it was free, so what the hell. These days you have to pay 5 quid to see some shitty unrehearsed band play in a pub, so to pay nothing to see an admittedly anaemic looking media phenomenon in a box had to be considered value for money. During the show, the pre-recorded Blaine kept banging on about death, which was a pleasant departure from the generally antiseptic attitudes we're usually treated to on television. |
