VISITORS by Richard Franklin (Oct 21 2003 08:28 GMT) - Aussie helmer Richard Franklin and screenwriter Everett DeRoche have reteamed for VISITORS -- a seafaring nail-biter of handsome craftsmanship that springs a few leaks before reaching port. Still, pic is a supremely unsettling piece of psychological manipulation, rooted in Hitchcock and early Polanski. [Variety.com] • |

Riwi riwi diffewent (Oct 21 2003 08:27 GMT) - Riwi, an Austrian company, is marketing a novel single-sided front-end kit you can install on your very own Triumph Speed Triple or other high-zoot naked bike. The system reduces brake dive, and wheelbase changes under compression, to a minimum. The front axle moves vertically via a four-bar linkage, with the front pivot point fixed at the bottom of the large single fork leg and the rear stabilized by a tie rod. The fact that the design doesn't fit inside a race-replica fairing may be as significant an obstacle to adoption as the price, but we're rooting for them all the same. |

Roll your own (Oct 21 2003 08:27 GMT) - The web has allowed all sorts of niche communities to form, and helps practicioners of obscure arts to inspire and educate one another. Consider machinists. Now people who do crazy things like hand-make radial internal combustion engines can share their techniques with others. Think of how much easier it would be to build a nice twin-cylinder motorcycle engine. Can micromarques be very far away? |

2nd session of our parliament has started with the important motion to ban a singer from performing in Bahrain (Oct 21 2003 08:24 GMT) - Calls to ban Lebanese singer Nancy Ajram from staging a concert in Bahrain may not be discussed at today's parliament session, sources told our sister paper Akhbar Al Khaleej. The issue has sowed divisions within parliament and one MP said that he would personally watch Ajram's concert. The proposal was initially submitted by the Al Asala parliamentary coalition chaired by second deputy chairman Shaikh Adel Al Maawda. They complained about the singer's erotic gestures and clothes. Ajram joins super-star Ragheb Alama to perform in a concert being held tomorrow as part of the second anniversary of Bennigan's restaurant. |

Windows server buyers buy it... because it's there? [John M Howitt] (Oct 21 2003 08:22 GMT) - Good Register article on why people buy Windows and Linux and what their concerns are about the two OS's. Windows score big on integrating with Windows products and availability of software but then drops of when it comes to reliability and security. The Linux chart is more positive but as is pointed out the Linux Bunnies are choosing the software not having to implement because of a corporate policy. regards - jmh |
