Tommy Stomper (Oct 21 2003 13:25 GMT) - Flying in the face of falling and failing crowds in the Canberra Amature Theatre Scene, last Saturday nights final performance of "the Who's TOMMY" had something rarely seen in Canberra Theatre. A full capacity audience standing and cheering before the final chords of the last song where played and then demanding more after the onstage band jam. If you missed this show then you missed one of the best shows seen locally in a long while. Well done to all the cast, crew and band. Bravo! |

Annabel Crabb's guide to the 'dubious charms' of Canberra (Oct 21 2003 13:25 GMT) - Sometime Canberra resident Annabel Crab has written this story in The Age, with her take on what what George W. Bush should see and do while in Canberra which she (possibly her sub-editor) describes as "dubious charms" Perhaps Annabel needs to get out of the kingston/manuka ghetto? If people are going to use occasions like presidential visits just to make fun of us maybe we need to put an end to them? (spikes on the runway should do it) |

Welsh Rugby Players mess up Royal Canberra (Oct 21 2003 13:25 GMT) - I don't know what it is about Rugby Players driving in Canberra but the UK's Independent has got this story about members of the Welsh Rugby Team (here for the World Cup) rolling a golf buggy on the hallowed turf of Royal Canberra to the immense embarrasment of the member who signed them in. Perhaps the Italians were involved somehow? |

Lakes closed by blue green algae (Oct 21 2003 13:25 GMT) - ABC Online has got a story here on another toxic algae outbreak in Canberra's lakes. We're advised to stay away from the lakes altogether. (If we all washed our cars the outflow might just flush the lakes...) |

Capitals 5th best in the world (Oct 21 2003 13:25 GMT) - For those of us who thought the Canberra Capitals world club championship crusade had ended at the hands of the Russians it might come as a surprise to read this story in the Age informing us that having bombed from medal contention the Ladies have stormed into a respectable 5th place. Lauren Jackson showed those pesky Koreans who the boss is with 46 points from the teams 74, which would worry me if I was the coach. |

Pyrotechnician accused of practicing on own staff - sort of (Oct 21 2003 13:25 GMT) - ABC Online have got an intriguing story here on "colourful local identity" and fireworks salesman Harold Upton allegedly shooting a departing member of staff with a "stun gun" (tazer?). You can see Harold's earlier outrageous comments as an "Industry Spokesperson" here. It's the wild west in the fireworks business. |

Rugby World Cup: Tonga v Wales (Oct 21 2003 13:25 GMT) - Last night many so called "rugby fans" piked on the Tonga v Wales game at Canberra Stadium. All tickets were sold, but the attendance was only 20,000. They missed a bit of light rain during the first half and one of the closest games of the RWC yet. This included an awesome try by Tonga, where they set a maul 15 meters out from the try line, and then rolled, mauled, and drove their way across the line (much better and legal than England's rolling maul). Anyway for those of you who missed this titanic clash there is a match report here. |

Railroad Dramas (Oct 21 2003 13:25 GMT) - The Canberra Times has this story on an accident that came straight out of a 1960's drama. A small child playing in the Queanbeyan railway yards slipped and fell, his foot getting caught under a turntable. All that was needed next was a dog or a kangaroo to save the day before the child was run over by a runaway carriage. Luckily enough none of that actually happened, and fire and ambulance crews were able to free the boy after two hours, who was taken to Canberra hospital with a suspected broken ankle. In the same article a car accident has put 3 people in hospital after a car went onto the wrong side of the road. |

AT&T says "Screw you WorldCom!" as they catch "employee misconduct" (Oct 21 2003 13:24 GMT) - AEgo says... The Bedminster, New Jersey, company said two employees circumvented internal controls in the accounting of costs, and access and other connection expenses were understated by $125 million in 2001 and 2002. Translation: We're not telling you who, but we've fixed the problems. And the culprits probably got hefty retirement packages, too. |
