Hypocrisy Today: The American Society of Sociopaths (Oct 21 2003 18:48 GMT)

- In keeping with the Connections theme suggested by Glitch: A sociopath is an individual whose behavior is socially acceptable, and in fact, who appears to be an ideal person. In reality, this individual sees no value in other people except as they may affect his/her own self-gratification. We think sociopaths are grossly misunderstood by their fellowpersons, and are dedicated to correcting this abberation of human perspective. In keeping with current self-help, feel- good trends, we have gathered together, sociopathically, to create awareness of the problem, scold society for allowing it to continue unabated, whine about the trauma it has caused in our lives, seek justice (and perhaps a healthy class-action settlement), and to generally behave in sociopathically- acceptable ways.

Microsoft monopoly says Apple monopoly is too restrictive (Oct 21 2003 18:48 GMT)

- Microsoft would be negligent if it didn't see Apple's music ambitions as a competitive threat. On the eve of Apple's splashy launch last week, Microsoft offered a Q&A which warned users not to be seduced by iTunes, Apple's integrated MP3 player/ripper/burner/radio/mus store, which is now available on Windows. Microsoft's David Fester (and whether Fester is his birthname or an homage[*] to his CEO, we don't know; Intel employs a Mr. Jason 'Ziller', which isn't at all relevant here) warned that iTunes carried several disadvantages.

Apple's iTunes Music Store Facing Challenges (Oct 21 2003 18:48 GMT)

- "Typical of most things Apple does, the recent unveiling of iTunes for Windows and the iTunes Music Store has made quite a splash. Reactions run the gamut from the fawning praise of the 'Apple can do no wrong' crowd to the Apple-haters who complain so much its hard to believe that they have time for much else. Much of the reaction has been positive, and even the griping is mostly benign. But there are some substantive issues that Apple is going to need to address to make their service truly competitive in the Windows world. It's Saturday, and I've just got my flame retardant suit back from the cleaners, so here goes...

Sneakery (Oct 21 2003 18:48 GMT)

- Bringing together the world's finest covert operatives, Sneakery offers these spies and secret agents the opportunity to take a break from the hectic pace of espionage and counterintelligence. This colourful roster has assembled for various and disparate reasons. Some seek relief from their clandestine routines and desire an outlet for their creativity. Some hope for a way to reach the masses and advance a particular ideology. Others plot against their fellow spies and hope that someone will mention a detail that betrays their secret identity and makes them an easy target.

- A very long investigation into how conflicts between the Bush Administration and the intelligence community marred the reporting on Iraq’s weapons. Hilarious Video -- Edited GI Joe Cartoons PSA overdubbed (Oct 21 2003 18:48 GMT)

- Remember how at the end of every G.I. Joe Cartoon they would have some short educational segment and it would always end with the line "And Knowing Is Half The Battle"? These clips are dubbed over with new dialogue and even some of the animation is changed and remixed. The result is so hilarious that I almost wet my pants the first time I saw them.

Larson: The Complete Far Side is a 'Hernia Giver' (Oct 21 2003 18:48 GMT)

- Cartoonist Gary Larson calls his 20-pound opus -- a two-volume set that includes every Far Side cartoon in its 14-year twisted history -- ''a hernia giver.'' But, he says, the heft has mostly to do with the quality of the glossy paper. ''I don't think the cartoons weigh that much.'' The Complete Far Side (Andrews McMeel, $135) will be published today, nearly nine years after Larson retired as a daily cartoonist. Or, as he puts it, ''I hung up my eraser, the most essential tool I owned.

View from the UK (Oct 21 2003 18:48 GMT)

- My breakfast every morning is a cup of coffee and a hearty serving of Lew Rockwell.com. As a UK resident, I enjoy the flavours and textures of traditional American libertarianism, a delicious alternative to the stodgy full English breakfast of deference and defeatism. Can you imagine living in a USA that never had a revolution, a Constitution or a Bill of Rights? That’s what it’s like living here.

Google's directory lags behind Dmoz (Oct 21 2003 18:47 GMT)

- Rogers Cadenhead: On Scripting News today, Dave Winer notes UserLand's absence from the weblog tools category of the Google Directory. Google creates that directory by importing the Open Directory Project database and sorting category pages by PageRank. Radio UserLand is included on the Open Directory Project's weblog tools category, which is edited by John Grohol and Laura Tripp, so it appears to be a problem that will be correcting itself during the next import.[Workbench]

Instant Classic; Bloody Samurai (Oct 21 2003 18:47 GMT)

- Instant Classic; Bloody Samurai Incidentally, some several days ago I saw School of Rock, and I laughed so so so hard. Leah and I saw it to "cleanse our palate" after being gored and stimulated to the redline while seeing Kill Bill Volume 1, which was quite a lot to take, and a movie I want to see again, but is also bloody with a capital "B." The counterpoint to the bloodiness is that there's a sense of humor and unreality behind it. It's a kung-fu picture.

From Scots Historian Professor Alexander Tyler, circa 1787, Re: The Fall of the Athenian Republic (Oct 21 2003 18:47 GMT)

- From Scots Historian Professor Alexander Tyler, circa 1787, Re: The Fall of the Athenian Republic "A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse (generous gifts) from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, (which is) always followed by a dictatorship." "The average age of the world's greatest civilization has been two hundred years.
