Wondering About Vignette (Oct 22 2003 05:59 GMT) - Im professionally involved in a situation where some people are looking seriously at installing Vignette to do some really large-scale content management and portalization. I havent gone near Vignette for years, since the days of StoryServer, which was generally hated for bugginess, arcane complexity, and TCL-centricity. If anyone would like to share some Vignette content-management or portal experiences, on or off the record, Id sure appreciate it, and Id publish them here too (or not) on request. |

Librarians, Laurels, Heroes (Oct 22 2003 05:59 GMT) - Tonight I managed to wrangle a ticket to the PEN USA Annual Literary Awards here in Los Angeles. Though I am a writer I don’t generally attend such events but the roster of honorees persuaded me to go. PEN is of course is the laudable organization which defends the rights of writers and readers the world over. This event was its thirteenth annual awards ceremony and the best part of the evening was devoted to honoring librarians and their work. |

Amazon post profit (Oct 22 2003 05:58 GMT) - While not nearly the boost expected after the holiday season, Amazon did post a profit for the third quarter, but a significant amount of the necessary extra came from nearly $30 million made off exchange rates. "Amazon reported $16 million in net income for the third quarter compared to a $35 million loss a year ago. Amazon typically only reaches profitability in the fourth quarter when the holiday season gives a huge boost to sales. The company's CEO was not shy about seeding the market for the upcoming quarter. "Thanks to free shipping and low prices, we expect more customers to turn to us for their holiday gifting needs this year--producing our biggest holiday shopping season ever," said Jeff Bezos, CEO at Amazon. |

From Manila, Today's History Lesson (Oct 22 2003 05:56 GMT) - From Manila, Today's History Lesson President Bush stopped in Manila Saturday to speak to the Philippine congress. The speech was warmly received, though some eyebrows lifted when he said, "America is proud of its part in the great story of the Filipino people. Together our soldiers liberated the Philippines from colonial rule." Actually, a lot of Filipinos think they had won liberation from Spain in 1898, and that "our soldiers" then fought a bloody four-year war -- against each other -- over U.S. |
