Demagoging Schiavo (cont.) (Oct 22 2003 14:31 GMT) - Troxler on how an Arrogant Legislature finally walks all over itself. Tuesday's banana republic mayhem was a spectacularly bad way to make new law. It was immature and intemperate. It was inconstant. It was law made up on the spot by a flock of clucki |

UT: Female gun advocate straight shoots with students (Oct 22 2003 14:30 GMT) - The founding fathers were the first feminists, they understood that the Second Amendment was about individual rights to defend themselves from those that would do them harm, said Janalee Tobais, president and founder of Women Against Gun Control (WAGC). WAGC is a national organization aimed at preserving the Second Amendment right to bear arms. Tobais spoke at the Taggart Student Center Auditorium on Thursday to support Utah State University's Students of the Second Amendment. 'I have a message for the United Nations and any other person or organization that tries to take my guns away to leave me and my family defenseless to terrorists, rapists and murderers; You'll have to pry my gun away from my cold dead fingers,' Tobais said. |

Store objects using the JDK 1.4 Preferences API (Oct 22 2003 14:30 GMT) - Anonymous Reader writes "The Preferences API -- a lightweight, cross-platform persistence API introduced in JDK 1.4 -- is designed to store small amounts of data (string, simple byte arrays, and so on.) and was not intended to be an interface to a traditional database. It can, however, be effective as a storage device if your data can be expressed as simple objects. This article offers an introduction to the API, explains how objects are stored, demonstrates the process in action, and provides a code library to do the work. |

Media Exposure (Oct 22 2003 14:28 GMT) - Via Killing Goliath W's PR Offensive Is a Sign of Desperation By late 1967, President Lyndon Johnson's failing war in Vietnam had pretty much driven him bananas. He remained determined to win an unwinnable ground war he had bamboozled Congress to support, leaving the contradiction to exhaust his composure. War critics and reporters persisted in asking disturbingly fundamental questions - such as "Why are we there?" - convincing answers to which the commander in chief did... |

Listen and learn (Oct 22 2003 14:28 GMT) - A few days ago I pretty much came down on the side of Terri Gross and Fresh Air in that show's abortive conflict with Bill O'Reilly of Fox News, even though she got a late hit on O'Reilly after he walked out of the interview. Yesterday O'Reilly gloated over NPR Ombudsman Jeffrey Dvorkin's rebuke of Gross and Fresh Air, both for the late hit and for legitimizing constant accusations by many on the Right that NPR is essentially a Lefty outfit:... I agree with the listeners who complained about the tone of the interview: Her questions were pointed from the beginning. She went after O'Reilly using critical quotes from the Franken book and a New York Times book review. |
