Happy Wednesday :) (Oct 22 2003 17:26 GMT) - I am in a very quiet place today. Not withdrawn, just quiet. It feels nice, actually. I will be spending even more time over at Mom's for a while. Her caretaker has had a family emergency of her own, so her presence at my mother's will be very sporadic. |

Heh (Oct 22 2003 17:25 GMT) - Remember what I've said in the past about the pendulum-like nature of blogging? Three days ago, I posted to comment on this trend, as a possible warning to readers. Even though I knew Murphy plays havoc with such statements, I really thought that the drive to NaNoWriMo would be preoccupying enough to divert me from news-blogging. And it has been about two weeks since I last felt driven to do a great deal of heavy newsblogging (looking back to about Oct 9th). Then, just before lunch, I see one news story that causes such jaw-dropping astonishment that I can't help blog it. |

It's claimed to be the Linux equivalent of the best/easiest-to-use tools for burning CDs on the monopoly desktop platform. |

Bolivian Jews Quaking De Nada (Oct 22 2003 17:24 GMT) - In the face of a popular uprising against the regime of Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada, Bolivian Jews are keeping a low profile amid unfounded concerns that populist leader Evo Morales may stir up antisemitic sentiment. This is just stupid behavior and irresponsible journalism. If anything is going to turn Morales against Bolivia's 700 Jews, it's going to be articles like this that preemptively brand him an antisemite. |

'Challenge' Spam Measures Spread like Slow Smolder, not Wildfire (Oct 22 2003 17:24 GMT) - DM News reviews the slow penetration of challenge-response anti-spam measures that also stymie many email marketing campaigns and prevent many newsletter subscriptions from getting delivered. Slow pickup rates for the often free services may show that the hassle of forcing email senders to jump through hoops to make sure their email gets delivered might be just a shade too much to guarantee that users will get all of their important email.
