Peacock feathers (Oct 22 2003 22:59 GMT) - And my central point is that I think this same theory, of self-sacrificial display, applies also to education, which is a similarly weird and arbitrary process, and which constantly enrages us all by being so very different from what would seem sensible and economical. What I'm saying is, to repeat the title I've chosen for this posting: education as peacock feathers. I think this explains a hell of a lot. It explains, for instance, why education goes on for so insanely long, and for longer and longer as more and more people can afford to do it for longer and longer. |

Good Reading (Oct 22 2003 22:59 GMT) - My daughter's 5th grade class is reading the best book -- Out of the Dust, by Karen Hesse. She brings it home and reads to me the parts they've read in class so I can keep up with the story. :) She is totally enthralled with it, and I have to say that I can see why. In my opinion, excellent reading for children her age! |

Songs Inspired by Literature Project (Oct 22 2003 22:59 GMT) - The public radio program To the Best of our Knowlege this weekend was devoted to the power of the written word. One segment that caught my imagination was about the SIBL (Songs Inspired by Literature) project. Deborah Pardes uses music to connect low-level readers with works of literature. Some of the songs are written expressly for SIBL (there's an annual songwriting contest), but there are hundreds of well-known songs by successful artists that have the same kind of connection. I always knew that Jefferson Airplane's "White Rabbit" was as much about Alice in Wonderland as it was about drugs, and it's pretty obvious that the singer of Sting's "Moon over Bourbon Street" is either Lestat or Louis from Interview with the Vampire, but I didn't realize until today that one of my all-time favorite heavy metal tunes, "Veteran of the Psychic Wars" by Blue Oyster Cult, was inspired by Michael Moorcock's Elric books. |

Donald Rumsfeld's memo (Oct 22 2003 22:57 GMT) - Read Donald Rumsfeld's memo on whether the US is winning or losing the war on terror. It's a great scoop for the often-derided USA Today. |

Texts on SQL (Oct 22 2003 22:57 GMT) - Erland Sommarskog has an interestng collection of articles on SQL. Worth a look ! This is a small collection of texts about some features in SQL Server that people frequently ask about in the newsgroups about MS SQL Server. Rather than being a FAQ with many questions with short answers, these are in-depth articles on some of my favourite topics The curse and blessings of dynamic SQL. |
