Economic Ignorance (Oct 23 2003 04:57 GMT) - Give them an inch, and they'll take a mile. Oakland has used its local government powers to restrict store sizes in a blatant attempt to target one chain, Wal-Mart. The measure's proponents show an amazing ignorance of how a free market works: "Supercenters are going into communities and doing damage to local economies," said Council President Ignacio De La Fuente, who sponsored the Oakland measure with Councilmember Jane Brunner."They say they bring jobs and sales tax, but they put local stores out of business," De La Fuente said Tuesday night. |
