uhm yeah (Oct 23 2003 11:59 GMT) - "Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer effectively closed the door on any Microsoft involvement in open-source initiatives, saying that the commercial approach to software development and sales provides the best security and value to enterprise customers. In addition, Ballmer branded open source as often a channel of last resort for software products that failed in the commercial marketplace. While distancing Microsoft from the open-source world, he half-jokingly replied 'never say never' when asked if the software giant would support Linux if the market were large enough.Ballmer, known for his frank, no-holds-barred style, fielded questions about competition from open source software and other topics at this week's Gartner's Symposium/ITxpo 2003 conference in Orlando, Florida....In the end, there's no one to be held accountable for flawed software in an open-source model, Ballmer continued. |

Four Year Legislative Assembly Terms to be Rammed Through (Oct 23 2003 11:57 GMT) - ABC Online has got a story here on a recommendation by the Legislative Assembly Legal Affairs Committee that the Assembly operate on 4 year terms after the next election. The Greens and the Democrats are demanding a refendum but as the Committee made the recommendation we can assume the Liberals are in on this power grab as well. We might bitch and moan about going to the polls, but the less often you vote the less power you have over the system. |

Lanhill Longbarrow (Folklore by Rhiannon) (Oct 23 2003 11:57 GMT) - As ocifant says, this place has traditionally been considered the burial place of a Danish leader, Hubba - hence the name 'Hubba's Low' - though of course it is a much older Neolithic barrow. It was excavated by John Thurnam in 1856, and in 1910 it was seen fit to use some of the limestone rubble used in its construction as foundation for the nearby Chippenham to Bristol road. Kathleen Wiltshire, in her 'Ghosts and Legends of the Wiltshire Countryside' reports that "We are told that even today there ... |

The Strib did an article on Senator Paul Wellstone's life in Northfield. Tristan owns the home that Paul and Sheila Wellstone raised their family in during the time they were in Northfield.
