SEC Probes AOL (Oct 23 2003 18:33 GMT) - A continuing federal probe into America Online's accounting practices has reached top management, as the Securities and Exchange Commission issued subpoenas to Time Warner Chairman Richard D. Parsons, AOL founder Steve Case and other senior officials, sources familiar with the probe said today.The SEC wants to question them about the company's booking of $400 million in revenue from transactions with German media conglomerate Bertelsmann AG following the 2001 merger of America Online and Time Warner.Amid the new revelations about the probe, the company also revealed today in its quarterly filing that America Online lost 2 million subscribers during the past year, including 688,000 users who left the online service during the third quarter. Wired Magazine publishes story online before printing it (Oct 23 2003 18:30 GMT) - Wired magazine did a very unusual thing today: they published a story online before printing it -- because news broke. Amazon has a new, searchable book archive which amounts to a huge leap toward making books searchable. Wired had an exclusive on it -- a really smart piece by gary wolf -- but it wasn't going to hit newsstands for three weeks (ah, the wonderful 19th century world of magazine publishing), so editor Mark Robinson and others at the mag decided to put it online at wired.com. |
