I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT THE RETURN OF NATIONAL ... (Oct 23 2003 21:59 GMT) - I HAVE ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT THE RETURN OF NATIONAL SECURITY as an election issue would permanantly put me in the Republican camp. This New Republic article, reminding us of how Congressional Republicans opposed Clinton's intervention in Kosovo. In early May 1999, Washington Post reporter Guy Gugliotta asked conservative think-tanker Robert Kagan why the supposedly hawkish congressional GOP was so hostile to Bill Clinton's war in Kosovo. "The Republicans have two choices today," replied Kagan. "They can say they are peaceniks and isolationists, or they can say they don't trust Clinton to conduct this war. |

Microsoft Earnings Report: Open Source A Threat (Oct 23 2003 21:59 GMT) - Cooper Stevenson writes "Shares of Microsoft are down today on the heels of Microsoft's prospectus/earnings report filed after the bell yesterday. Here are some highlights from the top of the list: "As a result of challenges to our business model, sales of our products may decline, we may have to reduce the prices we charge for our products, and our revenues and operating margins may consequently decline. Since our inception, our business model has been based upon customers agreeing to pay a fee to license software developed and distributed by us." Also... |

Wired story on Amazon's Search Inside the Book (Oct 23 2003 21:59 GMT) - From Wired's upcoming December issue: more about Amazon's "Search Inside the Book" feature.I put some quotes I found interesing below. I'm guessing it will cost more than $10 million to make all published works available and searchable electronically. Most important, it's still shockingly difficult to find information buried in books. |

Name That Tune: K-k-k-katie From K-k-kansas City (Oct 23 2003 21:59 GMT) - I'm trying to find a song for my wedding. The chorus goes something like this: "K-k-k-katie From K-k-kansas City, you're the only girl for me..." I don't need a copy of the song, but rather the real title and artist, and maybe an album name? All I know is it's an old song, maybe from the 30's or 40's? |

Judges sentences man to read in library every day (Oct 23 2003 21:59 GMT) - Charles Davis writes "from ananova.com A Turkish judge has sentenced a man to spend 90 minutes each day reading in a library for a month. Alparslan Yigit, from Yenifakili, should originally have been sentenced to 15 days in prison for drunkenness and disorderly conduct. But the judge opted for an alternative sentence to avoid putting extra pressure on overcrowded Turkish prisons. He ruled Yigit, 28, had to spend an hour and a half reading at a library every day for a month. |

Of All the Diseases To Be Named After Your Family (Oct 23 2003 21:58 GMT) - Thanks to Amazon.com's amazing new "full keyword search of books" service, I stumbled across a reference to disease called Rukavina type familial amyloid p. Also called Indiana type, presumably becuase so many of our kin settled there, the disease is described as follows: Indiana type familial amyloid polyneuropathy, a slowly progressive form of familial amyloid polyneuropathy with upper limb neuropathy in the distribution of the median nerves, leading to carpal tunnel syndrome and eventually trophic ulcers; ocular symptoms such as vitreous deposits may occur. |

I've been redirected by Google (Oct 23 2003 21:57 GMT) - Rajesh JainI just did a search on "Joi Ito" and got this as the first link. In fact, all the links on the page had a redirection component in the result links. Normally, Google gives the link to the website directly. Looks like they may now be starting to track clickthroughs. I repeated the search on a few other keywords, and I didn't find it again, so I guess it is one of those Google experiments. |
