Hockey Night Tonight! (Oct 23 2003 23:49 GMT) - direct link to mp3 When Rob and John Wright weren't busy fronting the eclectic and bizarre punk group NoMeansNo -- which stormed out of Victoria, British Columbia, in the early '80s -- they were busy playing with a few friends in the less challenging side project, the Hanson Brothers. The Hanson Brothers, named after the pugilistic hockey siblings in the Paul Newman film Slapshot, forewent the complex rhythms and funk/jazz tendencies of its mother group to revel in dumb-punk tribute to the Ramones. while this was just fun stuff, nomeansno are one of my favorite bands in the punk scene. |

Render 1,000,000 trees in eight seconds (Oct 23 2003 23:46 GMT) - SpeedTree is a graphic utility for generating realistic forestry in gaming and other contexts. It can render out 1,000,000 trees in 8 seconds on a home-grade PC. There's a (Windows-only) demo app that sounds pretty mindblowing. No love on my Mac, though. The Valley shows off some AMAZING new capabilities, including bump mapping, self-shadowing, specular effects, new trees (check out the giant Sequoias), animated grass, a new trunk algorithm and more. |

Google Considering Dutch Auction For IPO; Investment Bankers Crying (Oct 23 2003 23:43 GMT) - New banking firms like WR Hambrecht have been pushing the idea of the "Dutch Auction IPO" where instead of having a bunch of greedy investment bankers setting the price of your IPO (and, of course, pricing it below the real market price to guarantee a first day pop that the press likes so much - even though it means lost money to the company) you let everyone and anyone bid on how much they want to pay, and then set the actual IPO price based on the highest price where all of your shares will sell out. For years, this option has been around, but most companies have been afraid to try it out, believing (perhaps correctly) that they needed big name investment bankers touting the stock to guarantee that it got enough attention from the financial community. Google, of course, doesn't have that problem. Everyone has been drooling over the concept of a Google IPO for ages, so they don't necessarily need the same support of a big time underwriter. So, it's no surprise to hear that they're at least considering the idea of a Dutch auction IPO sometime early next year. |
