New series of open-access journals from U of California (Oct 24 2003 00:43 GMT) - The University of California eScholarship Repository has launched a series of open-access, peer-reviewed repository journals. A repository journal uses the institutional repository as the journal infrastructure. Submissions are deposited in the journal as preprints, and accepted articles are redeposited as postprints, labelled to show that they have been peer-reviewed. (PS: At other institutions, these are called overlay journals. |

Get Back (Oct 24 2003 00:40 GMT) - Posting has been pretty light this week, what with dealing with the new puppy, plus I've been suffering all week with a bad back. About three years ago, I was having back pain and numbness down one of my legs... |

Topic Exchange WebOutliner (Oct 24 2003 00:40 GMT) - I made some changes to the topic listings page on the Topic Exchange yesterday, and now Marc Barrot has got the WebOutliner to display recent posts. To check it out, go to the WebOutliner and click on the 'World' tab in the box on the right-hand side. You'll get a menu - pick one of the Topic Exchange items to get an outline containing the top 50 topics (ranked by the criteria you selected). Click on one to see its RSS feed rendered in the main window. Nice. |

Helpline Comment (24177) (Oct 24 2003 00:39 GMT) - when i first started learning about computers (not that long ago) i did use edlin a few times... but found it very weird only being able to view and edit one line at a time. i later realized that one could first use the "type" command, so you could see the entire contents of the file then using edlin next was quite a bit easier. after i had used it a few times i guess i forgot it was called edlin so i kept typing "eldin" and getting the "command not found" message btw: when i tried out that damn_small_linux distro yesterday i had to use one of the simpler linux editors.... |

iTunes Link Maker (Oct 24 2003 00:39 GMT) - A friend just showed me this very simple site that creates all of the scripts you need to make links on your own site to the iTunes Music Store. You should go and try out Apple's iTunes Link Maker. If you talk about a lot of music, I don't see how it'd be bad to reference your links with it. Decided to do one myself and considering the events of the week I thought it was kinda nice to do it for the brilliant Elliott Smith. Keep in mind that link will only work if you have iTunes installed. |

CNBC: Billy Tauzin is the next Jack Valenti (Oct 24 2003 00:38 GMT) - The next Jack Valenti, the next acquirer of pols to head the Motion Picuture Association of America, is supposed to be a piece of merchandise named Billy Tauzin. The good news is that the Louisiana Congress member is now a Republican. Maybe that'll make it easier for Dem presidential candidates (hint, hint, Gen. Clark) to stand up for American consumers against DMCAish mischief. From CNBC's Capital Report: |

Instant Blogging (Oct 24 2003 00:37 GMT) - So, I'm with some major players for a major CMS right now and I'd like to send out a "Does anyone have any questions they want to me to ask?" post but because blogging doesn't have that IM capacity (rss is v. asynchronous, isn't it?) it's pointless really. Somebody build an RSS IM device, please, then I can IM my subscribers for stuff like this... |
