Amazon Search (Oct 24 2003 02:42 GMT) - Amazon has unveiled a feature that many are heralding as useful: full-text search of 120,000 books (thus far). It allows you to preview the text so that you can get a feel for where the terms are used in context.Their explanation of how it works indicates that its utility is strictly of the preview before you buy and there are a limited number of pages you can view in each book.As I said earlier, a lot of people are going to think that this is the cat's meow. |

Andromeda (Oct 24 2003 02:41 GMT) - Andromeda (If you can't see the stars, turn up the brightness.) Pegasus is the trapezoid of four bright stars near the top, and Cassiopea is the smaller conglomeration stuck into the edge of the light polution, right in the center, about two thirds of the way down. In the very middle of the picture, just slightly to the right, is a small fuzzy blob with a bright center. See it? That is M-31, a large spiral galaxy. |

Underreporting casualties in Iraq. Press ... (Oct 24 2003 02:38 GMT) - Underreporting casualties in Iraq. Press underreports casualties I had never heard of "Editor & Publisher" before, but I came across this link, and thought the news was rather shocking. So while 106 troops were killed since the "end of hostilities," 1927 have been wounded since the war began, 200 have been killed from all causes, and over 4,000 troops have been medically evacuated from Iraq. The article says the stats are easily obtained from the Pentagon web site - though all I could find was press releases which just mention casualties one by one. |
