Review: Pulp Fiction (Oct 26 2003 02:59 GMT) - After seeing Kill Bill Vol. 1, I thought that it would be a good idea to see Quentin Tarantino's other major film, Pulp Fiction, so that I could get a feel for what came before in Tarantino's oeuvre. As mentioned in that previous review, I had avoided Pulp Fiction thus far because of the hype surrounding it. I feared that the movie would not live up to the hyperbole and the movie would turn out just as I had initially suspected: a postmodern movie about nothing, devoid of plot and more concerned with form than anything else. |

Iraq Survey Fails to Find Nuclear Threat (Oct 26 2003 02:58 GMT) - Iraq Survey Fails to Find Nuclear Threat According to records made available to The Washington Post and interviews with arms investigators from the United States, Britain and Australia, it did not require a comprehensive survey to find the central assertions of the Bush administration's prewar nuclear case to be insubstantial or untrue. Although Hussein did not relinquish his nuclear ambitions or technical records, investigators said, it is now clear he had no active program to build a weapon, produce its key materials or obtain the technology he needed for either. Among the closely held internal judgments of the Iraq Survey Group, overseen by David Kay as special representative of CIA Director George J. Tenet, are that Iraq's nuclear weapons scientists did no significant arms-related work after 1991, that facilities with suspicious new construction proved benign, and that equipment of potential use to a nuclear program remained under seal or in civilian industrial use. ed: |

The law is a ass (Oct 26 2003 02:58 GMT) - I've decided to close comments on the "Horses" post. It's not that the conversation was all that vitriolic, but I am tired of people posting bloodless, mind-numbing comments about this and that court ruling, using all sorts of euphemisms and... |

Fix the fund (Oct 26 2003 02:56 GMT) - Back in 1990, the Arizona Legislature created a "rainy day fund" to help smooth out the state's up-and-down finances. The idea was simple and wise: In good times, the state would put aside money, which it would then be able to use in difficult times. |

Time to pay up (Oct 26 2003 02:56 GMT) - Gov. Janet Napolitano apparently thinks she needs a political hammer to cajole Republican lawmakers to see it her way on reforming Child Protective Services. So she has turned a deaf ear to pleas by lawmakers and the Independent Redistricting Commission to provide enough money to operate and defend itself in a lawsuit scheduled for trial next month. She is evidently holding the commission's funding hostage until the Republicans agree to her plan for CPS. The trouble for the governor is that this hammer could turn into a whiffle ball. |

Marlins Win World Series (Oct 26 2003 02:56 GMT) - Marlins 2, Yankees 0. In a five hit shutout, Josh Beckett pitched a great game and tagged the final out! The Florida Marlins are the world champions baseball for the second time in their 11-season history. For the first time since 1981, a World Series ends in Yankee Stadium without a Yankee victory. Definitely worthy of a topic icon. |

Kata Nineteen - Word Chains (Oct 26 2003 02:53 GMT) - There’s a type of puzzle where the challenge is to build a chain of words, starting with one particular word and ending with another. Successive entries in the chain must all be real words, and each can differ from the previous word by just one letter. For example, you can get from "cat" |

Cognition and Online Course Design: Game, or, Guide on the Side? (Oct 26 2003 02:52 GMT) - Whether it is tacitly acknowledged or not, there are two competing (and divergent) philosophies with respect to cognition and online course design. Although almost all would agree that courses should be learner-centered and incorporate active (rather than passive) learning strategies, there is a great deal of disagreement about the implementation and underlying philosophy. Is it a learner-driven game, adventure, or journey? |
