DSL at home again! (Oct 26 2003 15:08 GMT) - Hooray, I have DSL at home again!I wanted to change my ISP from one who charged 45/month for a 512kbps connection to a new player in the french DSL market which offers the same speed for 25/month.But the new ISP is victim of its success, and setting up the connection was not quick, to say the least. During more than 3 weeks, I had to use a sloooow dial-up modem...Yesterday, I received my new account credentials. |

Linux Work (Oct 26 2003 15:08 GMT) - So, this weekend I've got some time to spare and dedicated it to restoring my Linux laptop to life. I foolishly tried to update to RedHat 9 from 8 without considering the limitations of a 6 Gb hard drive with 2 Gb already dedicated to another OS. I was surprised that RedHat crashed the machine, rather than gracefully declined, but it left the machine a mess, with two hard drive partitions full to overflowing, and an OS that would boot and then lock up attempting to start X Windows. My first urge was to just blow away everything and start again. However, that really isn't the way to learn anything. |

In Iraq, Sexual Assault Incidents Are Brushed Aside, Report Says (Oct 26 2003 15:07 GMT) - In Iraq, Sexual Assault Incidents Are Brushed Aside, Report Says A recent report on sexual assaults in Iraq has focused attention on dismissive attitudes or worse to rape, not just among ordinary Iraqis but also among police and health officials. Bernard Kerik, the former New York City police commissioner who until recently oversaw the Iraqi police, has said that reforming their attitudes to rape is a high priority, but the message has not filtered down to many Iraqi policemen. |

In God We Trust -- Maybe (Oct 26 2003 15:06 GMT) - In God We Trust -- MaybeI've been thinking about divorce and why it's so difficult, so painful, so destructive, especially why it takes so long to simply do -- the time between separating and actually being legally divorced is much longer than anyone starting the process ever anticipates -- and takes so long to recover from. There are some good things to be said for divorce, but I don't think it's easy to remember them when you are going through it. It's all about a complete breakdown in trust and a long, gradual rebuilding of that trust. And that is really hard work. A few weeks ago, I was sitting in a ice cream shop with two friends -- they are married, both work, they have one son who's pretty much my son's closest friend. |
