Home abortions soar in Iraq as unwanted pregnancies rise (Oct 26 2003 16:45 GMT) - Home abortions soar in Iraq as unwanted pregnancies rise In Iraq, a Muslim country, abortion has long been illegal - and socially taboo - except in medical emergencies. But since the collapse of Saddam Hussein's rule turned the established order on its head, Baghdad has witnessed an upsurge in promiscuity - and the emergence of a practice too risky to carry out under the former regime, with its network of spies. Abortion has become readily available. |

Pentagon wants 'mini-nukes' to fight terrorists (Oct 26 2003 16:44 GMT) - Pentagon wants 'mini-nukes' to fight terrorists Influential advisers at the Pentagon are backing the development of a new generation of low-yield nuclear weapons - so-called mini-nukes - in a controversial report to be published this autumn. The document is believed to have the strong backing of Donald Rumsfeld, the defence secretary, who last week called for a "bolder" approach to national security in a leaked Pentagon memo. A month ago the Senate eased restrictions on nuclear tests at the military's Nevada site, where no new test has taken place since 1992. |

Linux: Journaling Filesystem Shootout (Oct 26 2003 16:43 GMT) - Mike Benoit recently posted a link to results from his new and improved file system shootout, using better hardware and running more tests. Using two benchmarks that are designed to measure hard drive and file system performance, Bonnie++ and IOZone, he's compared a number journaling filesystems found in the 2.6 kernel [forum]. Included in the lineup are EXT2 (not journaling, but an effective baseline [story]), JFS, XFS, ReiserFS, Reiser4, and EXT3 each compared head to head on both SCSI and IDE drives. In Mike's summary he labels JFS and XFS as 'best bang for your buck' explaining, "While not the fastest file systems, both of them consistently perform close to EXT2, while using minimal CPU. |

The Apartment - Random Thoughts (Oct 26 2003 16:43 GMT) - Liz once said, when she first visited and brashly took the tour herself, that everyone has at least one room that they don't pay enough attention to. I have one of those. I told her it wasn't up for a rating, tho. Mine is back there, behind the closed door. |

Ohio State's Pasting of Indiana (Oct 26 2003 16:40 GMT) - I am sure people will make much of this game, calling it the rebirth or breakout of the OSU offense. And there was a lot of offense -- 598 yards, 8 per play. And the score could have easily been 63-6, OSU turned the ball over 3 times in the redzone. But really this game means nothing. Indiana is such a bad program. |
