Tomorrow's not Monday already, is it? (Oct 26 2003 23:07 GMT) - Hope everyone had a nice weekend. I will leave you tonight with another round of "Did You Know". If you lace your shoes from the inside to the outside the fit will be snugger around your big toe. Only 1/3 of the people that can twitch their ears can twitch only one at a time. The expression "What in tarnation" comes from the original meaning: |

Happy Birthday to me... (Oct 26 2003 23:05 GMT) - Light posts the last couple days, thanks to a much-needed weekend of Internet-free time. Many thanks to my parents, who flew in and not only helped me celebrate but also graciously watched the kids last night so my wife and I could spend a night kid-free downtown Chicago. Friday night, we took my parents to Heaven on Seven with my folks (they just opened in Naperville, further proving my theory that everything you could ever want is in Naperville). Saturday, Robin and I ate at Bistro 110 off of Michigan Avenue. If you’ |

The Case for Python (Oct 26 2003 23:05 GMT) - I'm trying to decide what language to learn next and I'm really leaning towards Python. I figure that I can master C# at work since the big project relies on it and I'm pretty much done with Java (as much as I like it) because I just can't seem to get any traction on using it. I've heard a lot of good things about Python and the PyObjC seems to have reached stable, mainstream status. Plus, Panther now lets Python into the Quartz graphics libraries, which suggests that Python is poised to break into first-language status in Mac OS X—joining Objective-C, Java, and AppleScript. |

Natural Born Killers of PHP (Oct 26 2003 23:05 GMT) - Recently I revised Optimizing PHP, an article that I wrote in 2002. I'm pleased to say that it hasn't aged much. The changes I had to make include a recommendation to use FastCGI with IIS, adding Turck MMCache to the opcode cache list, recommending Cache_Lite, replacing foreach with list/each for large arrays, and the realisation that arrays need to be passed by reference too. Then I realized how much more I could have discussed. I started to think more about performance profiling after discussing APD in a previous post. |

Unsolved Mystery (Oct 26 2003 23:04 GMT) - What Controls Variation in Human Skin Color?: "Diversity of human appearance and form has intrigued biologists for centuries, but nearly 100 years after the term genetics was coined by William Bateson in 1906, the genes that underlie this diversity are an unsolved mystery. One of the most obvious phenotypes that distinguish members of our species, differences in skin pigmentation, is also one of the most enigmatic. There is a tremendous range of human skin color in which variation can be correlated with climates, continents, and/or cultures, yet we know very little about the underlying genetic architecture. Is the number of common skin color genes closer to five, 50, or 500? |

Setting up RRAS, Virtual PC on Windows 2003 to test for Windows 2000 MCSE. (Oct 26 2003 23:03 GMT) - I spent my Sunday afternoon watching the Detroit Lions suck again. I'm glad that wasn't the only thing I did on Sunday even though the Lions suck, setting up Virtual PC on Windows 2003 is doesn't. I'm studying for my MCSE 2000, the usual way for studying for Cert's is setup a lab with things helping emulate an environment.  The current cert i'm studying for is Windows 2000 Server. This requires for studying RRAS (routing, remote access services. |
