Blogger News Item (Oct 27 2003 04:48 GMT) - this is the kind of large scale pressure that "rationalizes" The economy by taking out costs but that means jobs and further pressure on state income. The governor of Illinois, intensifying his battle with Bush administration regulators over rising drug bills, will release an analysis today showing that his state could save $91 million a year by buying prescription medications from Canada. <SPACER width="8" type="block"> <NOSCRIPT> < |

Text Drop-shadows using CSS (Oct 27 2003 04:48 GMT) - Chuq was bitching about Marc Canter's whining about Paolo's pointing to a post by Todd Dominey. I read Chuq's post, and followed the trail through to Todd's post about the text-shadow CSS2 attribute, and am pleased to announce I am using it on this here website. If you're using Safari 1.1, then you'll notice the drop-shadows on the title of each post, as well as in the sidebar title's and the banner at the top of this page... pretty cool, in my opinion. |

Lazy Bastard (Oct 27 2003 04:47 GMT) - I considered writing up a Panther review (hint: it's great). Then I considered a little tale about the fantastic vacation I just had while kayaking up north. Heck, there was a brief hour long period when I even thought about examining the psychoses of geeks. Instead, I am going to be a lazy bastard and continue to ignore this weblog until I feel good and ready. |

Salem tricyclist tries to hijack car (Oct 27 2003 04:47 GMT) - In Portland, you have to watch out for all the bicyclists on the streets. Apparently, Salem residents need to keep an eye out for tricycles. Last Tuesday, Oswaldo Valenciano, 24, went out for a joyride on his tricycle, shooting his gun wildly. Until he slammed into a car, that is. Then, he let himself into Marion Rodriguez's car and demanded that Rodriguez take him to the hospital. |

(Oct 27 2003 04:46 GMT) - Another star map: I was thinking, "Hey! that's a pretty good picture of M31!" because that is about the best I've seen it through binoculars or a telescope. It took quite a bit of post processing to bring out the detail and suppress the noise (and it is suppressed), so I was feeling pretty good about the results of my digital astrophotography. |

Silence speaks volumes - Guardian (Oct 27 2003 04:45 GMT) - "The British government's failure to condemn a high-ranking American's anti-Islamic outburst is a disgrace....Had such an attack been against any other religious or ethnic group, there would have been an uproar. Indeed, we witnessed just such a reaction when Mahathir Mohamad spoke of a world governed by the Jewish people. Everyone was understandably up in arms. The British government demanded that the Malaysian ambassador issue a retraction of words that "incited racial and religious hatred". |

USA Today adds up the cold, hard facts... (Oct 27 2003 04:44 GMT) - I've been saying it for some time now, but USA Today finally ran the stats and reached the inevitable conclusion... the proportion and severity of US wounded in Iraq is significantly greater than in prior wars.Since the Iraq war began in March, one American servicemember has been killed for every seven injured in combat, as opposed to wars from last century, where that number was closer to one death for every two wounded. That's good news, you might say. More US soldiers are coming home alive. |

Paul Boutin on the AMD ... (Oct 27 2003 04:43 GMT) - Paul Boutin on the AMD 64-bit processors in Slate. "The company claims its 64-bit chip will launch a new era of "cinematic computing," the term used by makers of graphics cards to suggest computer animation so rich it looks like video. But boilerplate hyperbole doesn't answer the basic questions: What exactly is a 64-bit CPU? More important, should you buy one? |

Media Reform conference - agenda and fringe conference (Oct 27 2003 04:40 GMT) - Seems the detailed agenda for the Media Reform / Free Press conference is out. It's not on the website yet (I got it via the Reclaim the Media list) so I include it below. It promises to be a fascinating experience. One of the most important things, I think, is the slot for 'regional strategy sessions' on Sunday morning. The conference does seem designed, as promised, to move from critique to action. |
