Live From LA... (Oct 27 2003 10:14 GMT) - So, yesterday can best be described as an onerous travel day with a great geek out night. My 8AM flight from JFK in NY just about made it to LA, but didn?t receive clearance to land; so, it flew back to Phoenix, Arizona, where we sat on the tarmac for about 2 hours. |

Tom Steinberg on flat fees ... (Oct 27 2003 10:13 GMT) - Tom Steinberg on flat fees for media: "The licence fee, so creaky and antiquated in the World of Sky suddenly looks very different. It looks far more like the world's best example of a mandatory flat fee for media. It looks like the world's best example of how to distribute a single financial pot between different media creators. It looks like how the whole net will work. |

.NET Rocks! - PDC Edition Quotes (Oct 27 2003 10:11 GMT) - Heh, cheesy for me to re-blog what Peter blogged about .NET Rocks (especially since I was especially silly tonight) but here's what we did: They ran a game where Carl and Mark ask .NET related questions and an audience member has to decide if the panelists answers are correct or not. Kinda like Hollywood Squares -- including the silly initial answer (see below). |

Rhythmodynamics - Science of the Future (Oct 27 2003 10:11 GMT) - The problem of the ether and the problem of motion are still waiting for solution. That Homely Smell (Oct 27 2003 10:11 GMT) - Yesterday evening, and in accordance with family tradition, I baked my Christmas cake. Now the entire house is rich with the warm aroma of recently cooked cake. It's the sort of smell that makes a house like a home. The cake is prepared so far in advance because, over the weeks to come, and like some kind of temporary family pet, it must be fed every other week with 1 tablespoon of brandy and 1 tablespoon of rum. By the time the days roll around to 25th December this traditional fruitcake will be so laced with alcohol that those eating it will be met with a heady miasma as they take their first succulent bite. |

When the law is not the law (Oct 27 2003 10:09 GMT) - The Sunday Telegraph reports on yet another example of the EU 'standards': It was reported last week that an Austrian farmer, Johann Thiery, had been fined and threatened with prison for selling "apricot marmalade" made from a traditional Austrian recipe passed on by his grandmother. Under EU rules "marmalade" can only be made from citrus fruit. Sternly defending Mr Thiery's punishment, a European Commission spokesman said: "The law is the law. |
