NYT article on FERPA and suicide... (Oct 27 2003 18:45 GMT) - Yesterday's Sunday edition of the NYT included this article on the implications of privacy laws on students who are suffering from depression and at risk of suicidal thoughts. Interesting quote from an administrator at the University of Michigan's Depression Center, "If a student says, `I'm going to jump,' we will err on the side of protecting them, rather than respecting their confidentiality. We will take that risk, whether or not we have permission." |

Maybe I should go commercial photographer (Oct 27 2003 18:45 GMT) - I've had more requests for use of my photos lately including one from Marie Claire magazine in the UK and another from Max Online in Germany. Unfortunately I was a little slow getting back to Marie Claire, and they went with an alternative as they had to go to press. Ah well.. next time. The London Expo organisers also used some of my photos from the sci-fi conference two weekends ago. |

Cold Heat: Hot Styles for Cool Seasons (Oct 27 2003 18:45 GMT) - Feature Story: SUMMER HEAT IS EASY, a season of simplicity in t-shirts and shorts. Winter cold is more complex, challenging even the most fashion-forward among us with layers and textures that can overwhelm, rather than highlight, your sense of style. But as the temperatures begin to drop, there are plenty of ways to generate heat with some cool fall and winter fashions. The new season blurs the lines between work and play with boldly colored shirts and playfully patterned pants partnered with deep denims and form-fitting sweaters. |

Truly Yours, Gay advice: Bisexual brouhaha? And should I date an HIV+ man? (Oct 27 2003 18:45 GMT) - Truly Yours: Dear Lena, It's rather queer that a drag queen would pass moral judgment on the lifestyle of a happily married bisexual. I'm sure you're aware that couples can be legally married in Nevada at a drive-thru, using whatever vows they choose (which may not include monogamy), by an Elvis impersonator...or even a female illusionist. Rather than criticizing "Happy Married Bi" for tricking with closed-minded gay men, you might have suggested he and his wife explore the idea of plural marriage with a much more suitable bisexual man, whom they both found compatible. |

Web Services are technically not Distributed Objects. [Kaleem Aziz] (Oct 27 2003 18:44 GMT) - In the following article, Daniel is correct if taken in a technical sense of the analogy, but it does not discuss the business sense analogy that I give to Web Services being like gaint Object Oriented system: http://www. ftponline. com/javapro/2003_08/magazine/c asp Daniel creates a successful debate about a few things, and I agree he is right within his answer to his debate. |

That being that (Oct 27 2003 18:43 GMT) - Took my second and last midterm today. The one that was open-book, open-notes, and only 10% of the final grade. As you can guess, I wasn’t overly worried. Or indeed worried at all. |

At the company's Professional Developers Conference here, Microsoft founder and Chairman Bill Gates previewed Longhorn and the world's largest software maker's long-term development goals to the people who will build the applications that work on the new operating system. Microsoft is expected at some point during the day to tell developers when they can expect a "beta," or pre-release test version, of the new operating system. |
