Didn't see THIS coming... (Oct 27 2003 20:59 GMT) - Who's suprised by this? The Boston Red Sox, still smarting from a bitter seven-game loss to the rival Yankees in the ALCS, fired manager Grady Little on Monday. I mean, hell, I've never played baseball in my life, let alone managed it, but even *I*... |

Oynk: Kosher Bomb Sniffing Hogs (Oct 27 2003 20:59 GMT) - Former Chief Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu and Kiryat Arba's Chief Rabbi Dov Lior both offered Rabbinic endorsements to test wild pigs for use in bomb detection in Israel. The pig, which is considered impure according to Jewish law, make for excellent sniffers. One kibbutz in Israel is already producing bomb sniffing-pigs. The initial question was posed to the Rabbis by the Gedud HaIvri, a volunteer group in Israel that deploys canines and dog handlers to help sniff out Arab terrorists. A spokesman from the Gedud HaIvri told IDF Radio that pigs might be used for bomb detection if they prove to be more effective than dogs. |

Free State Project in the New York Times (Oct 27 2003 20:59 GMT) - My thanks to CNE President Tim Evans for emailing me about this New York Times article, about the Free State project. I usually look at the daily NYT menu. Sod's Law (and a rugby game – won by plucky little USA) decreed that today I didn't. First few paragraphs: KEENE, N. |

Jenny, I've got your number (Oct 27 2003 20:58 GMT) - As you might know, I grew up a very small, rural area. Up until the time I was about 15, we only had to dial five digits to reach someone on the phone. Yeah, I'm serious. My grandmother's phone number was 752-6905. If I wanted to talk to my grandmother, I'd pick up the phone and dial 2-6905. |

Idiocracy (Oct 27 2003 20:56 GMT) - I'll be the first to admit my underestimation of the political and social significance of Hollywood. Despite the fact that Palestine's number one foreign export is suicide bombers and that no one else in the world has been able to get them to stop blowing themselves up in Israel (no cares if they want to go do it in the desert someplace), some in Hollywood are certain they can use their acting credentials to negotiate... |

Memory glasses. We know a ... (Oct 27 2003 20:55 GMT) - Memory glasses. We know a few people who could really, really use this: a pair of eyeglasses invented by scientists at MIT that make it easier to remember things. The eyeglasses are attached to a mini-computer that's programmed with whatever it is you want to remember, which then flashes messages onto tiny screens built-into the lenses of the glasses, but just for 180th of a second. That's not long enough for the wearer to notice, but it's enough to have a subliminal effect on the brain and apparently make it easier to recall things. |

Function scope in temporary vars (Oct 27 2003 20:55 GMT) - I just smacked into an interesting phenomenon with function scope in temporary variables, that appears to be new in F04 ... it occurs in FLAs published to AS1 and AS2 in F04, but does not seem to occur in FMX. It would be interesting to know what exactly has changed, and why ... read on for examples. |
