Bush's Reagan Moment? (Oct 27 2003 20:49 GMT) - Of all the astounding claims made by the present administration -- and from the economy to the war in Iraq, there have been plenty -- the one I find utterly incomprehensible is the frequent comparison to Ronald Reagan. Its hard to imagine two Presidents less alike in American history than Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. |

Brent Rector rocks! (Oct 27 2003 20:48 GMT) - Hopefully all of you who are attending the PDC are now holding a copy of Brent Rector's Developers' Guide to Longhorn in your hands. Brent was kind enough to send me a soft copy of his book, so I got to read some fun stuff from our old Essential COM days back at DevelopMentor that didn't make it past the editors (they just don't get it, do they, Brent?) This is an excellent book. Brent delivers a very clear and organized introduction to the vast API space of Longhorn. There's detailed coverage of XAML, MSBuild, WinFS, data binding, Indigo. |

Slate: The Best Search Idea ... (Oct 27 2003 20:48 GMT) - Slate: The Best Search Idea Since Google. Steven Johnson. For logical reasons, Amazon seems to have designed "search inside" to help readers find text in books that they haven't bought yet. But there's just as much opportunity to apply "search inside" to books you already own. |

Muslim paranoia: Enemies made us impotent! (Oct 27 2003 20:45 GMT) - Chicago Sun-Times columnist Mark Steyn tries to get a chuckle out of the following story. As you'll see, it turns out remarkably forced, ignorant and culturally insensitive. "Last month mass hysteria apparently swept the capital city, Khartoum, after reports that foreigners were shaking hands with Sudanese men and causing their penises to disappear. One victim, a fabric merchant, told his story to the London Arabic newspaper Al-Quds Al-Arabi. A man from West Africa came into the shop and 'shook the store owner's hand powerfully until the owner felt his penis melt into his body. |
