Deus Ex Machina (Oct 27 2003 23:46 GMT) - Posted by The Happy Tutor Guide to Literary Terms: In some ancient Greek drama, an apparently insoluble crisis was solved by the intervention of a god, often brought on stage by an elaborate piece of equipment. This "god from the machine" was literally a deus ex machina. Few modern works feature deities suspended by wires from the ceiling, but the term deus ex machina is still used for cases where an author uses some improbable (and often clumsy) plot device to work his or her way out of a difficult situation. When the cavalry comes charging over the hill or when the impoverished hero is relieved by an unexpected inheritance, it's often called a deus ex machina. |

Handouts (Oct 27 2003 23:44 GMT) - A recent comment to this post reminded me of an annoying habit conservatives seem to share. How often have you heard a right-winger, when they think your argument is mistaken, to say "Nice that we live in a land of free speech so you can make such mistakes." For them... |

Panther ships with Ant, XDoclet and JBoss! (Oct 27 2003 23:43 GMT) - I've just installed Panther and since you don't get stuff like CVS installed by default, I decided to open up the XCode CD and install the developer tools. To my surprise there are some Java tools tucked away including Ant, XDoclet, log4j and JBoss. If you install the Java tools, they can be found in : Ant 1.5. |

Pet Rock Star's back and "Your Own Dot Org" is up (Oct 27 2003 23:43 GMT) - Shannon's just blogged about a song that I asked her to write for Ben and Mena for their birthdays. (In case you've ever wondered, the reason their company is called Six Apart is because they're birthdays are six days apart...) Shannon went above and beyond the call of duty and did a most amazing job. In order to get the humor/wit balance just right, she read everything Ben and Mena had ever blogged and probably knows more about them now than even the most dedicated stalker. She ended up with a song called "Your Own Dot Org. |

Desperate Progress? by Kevin Drum ... (Oct 27 2003 23:41 GMT) - Desperate Progress? by Kevin Drum Look, I'm not one who proclaims every attack in Iraq as proof that the administration is incompetent, but what can you make of George Bush's remarks after this weekend's alarmingly sophisticated attacks, first on the hotel Paul Wolfowitz was staying at and then on the Red Cross headquarters and four police stations? President Bush this morning said the increasing attacks on U.S. |

Ohio Sues AOL Over Cancellation Process (Oct 27 2003 23:41 GMT) - Just a month after AOL agreed to clarify the terms on how they handle canceled subscriptions, Ohio's attorney general has sued the company, saying that the company doesn't clearly explain the cancellation procedure, and is tricking people who thought they had signed up for a free trial. It's unclear if this is after AOL's agreed changes or if the Ohio AG is trying to sneak one in before they comply with the terms of their own settlement. |
